In your Sept. 5 issue of Just Out, "The Learning Curve” , was an article that 1 couldn’t pass up. The com mitment that the students from The Dalles 1 High Schcxil showed in their fight to form a Gay Straight Alliance over community opposition filled me with pride. These students have shown incredible dedication to their task. The Dalles School Board, which affirmed and reaffirmed the right of the students to pursue their cause, has matched that dedication. I want to express my recognition for all of their efforts. It is not enough to say that schools need to be physically safe for all students. Students need to have a safe place in which they can handle the already tumultuous emotional and mental trials of being a teen-ager. The students in The Dalles were only asking for that opportunity. I have seen schix^ls with honors societies, environmental clubs, volunteer organizations, religious groups and community groups like the GSA. Whether they’re smart, green, giving, pious, gay or all of the above, student organiza tions that support student interests and needs should he allowed to grow. I am committed to working with groups like PFLAG and the Safe Schixils Alliance to ensure that all students feel welcome and safe in public schixils. The result will he lower suicide rates, less bullying and fewer hate crimes while boosting graduation rates, achievement and comprehension for all P rid e N orthw est needs in p u t from the Ju st h"l4!l I' i I1! The benefits to Portland Pride and the Port- land gay community would he incalculable. I’ve read a lot of magazine and newspaper articles about Pride celebrations in other cities. San Francisco always makes the news, of course, but so have the celebrations in many other cities. I’ve also spoken with people from cities around the country who have told me what great Pride celebrations they have. To my knowledge, no national publication has written about Portland Pride. Having Melissa as our headliner would put us on the map and highlight what a great place Oregon is for the GLBT community. Do we want to build a stronger connection between the gay and nongay communities in Portland? Get Melissa Etheridge. Her presence here would accomplish two things that might seem mutually exclusive. First, her appearance at Portland Pride would underscore that we are a community and that she’s a part of it. That affirmation from someone of her stature could only he beneficial. Second, she would represent a link between the gay community and the nongay community, since there are millions of Melissa fans who are straight. (No pressure here, right, Melissa?) Neither of those things are trivial. Do we want to increase attendance at Port land Pride? Get Melissa. I’m sure more folks from the GLBT community would attend, and my bet is that a lot of nongay Melissa fans would also he there. I have no idea what she would want to he paid for her appearance, but we’re creative folks. We can think of a way to do it. Hold a bake sale. I have a killer chocolate pound cake recipe. Raffle something. Walk for Melissa T When an ordinary R ealto r sim p ly w on’t do... AND J U S T ONE P A I R OF G L A S S E S ? Sell tickets to the show. Ask her to appear for free if we pay her travel j expenses. She might do it. Can’t hurt to ask. | Oh, there’s one other good reason to have her at Portland Pride 2004: one hell of a rockin’ good show. And there’s nothing wrong with that! * P atricia H ansen Portland • • • would like to see entertainer and drag queen Jackie Beat (of the movie Wigstock) and her hand, Dirty Sanchez (with Mario Diaz and DJ Barheau). Their singles “Replicunt," "Asymmet ric” and “Fuckin’ on the Dance Floor” have club kids dancing on both coasts. Jackie also starred in a series of commercials for MTV as a “Betty Crocker on acid” housewife. I M ichael K rzeszak Portland U S . R ep.
