The Seattle-based nonprofit organization was formed in 1998 to protect the rights of gay, lesbian, bi and traas people through lobbying in the Legis lature and political contacts in the state and kx:al governments. It maintains a core gixtl of amending state civil rights laws to explicitly include queers and ensure that they are safe from harassment and free from discrimination in employment, housing, parenting and other basic rights. “From thwarting anti-GLBT ballot measures in New Mexico to advancing relationship recognition that would protect families in Mary land to ensuring the safety of public students in , Florida, these grants will support the important work of state G L B T advocacy groups across the country,” said Seth Kilboum, HRC national field director. “The partnership we’ve formed with these groups is a priority for us...and we will continue to contribute staff support, volun teer time and important funds to groups fighting critical battles at the state level." Now in its fourth year, the Equality Fund has contributed a total of $472,500 to state sexual minority groups. They use the grants to organize, reemit and train volunteers, hire lobbyists to advtKate for and against queer-related legislation, pnxluce voter guides and organize town hall meetings to educate citizens about equality.
