Ellen promised she wouldn’t become one of those mothers who only talk about feeding schedules and nipple chafing and poop. But guess what? It’s all she talks about. I don’t want to he petulant, hut Ellen and her girlfriend don’t pay enough attention to me and my issues any more. We don’t go out to bars, they don’t invite me over to dinner, and I feel like I’ve lost my best friend. Why do lesbians forget that their other friends even exist as stxin as they give birth? I feel all alone in the world. How long do people remain obsessed with their infants? G in 1 demand that they he better friends to me, even though they have a noisy, smelly hahy now? Or am I supposed to just let my resentment fester until I burst? —John wom an who is every thing I’ve always w anted in a partner. T h e com plication is th a t she is trying to have a hahy w ith her close gay male friend, David. T h ey ’ve been insem inating for m onths and plan to raise the child together. David is very nice, but h e’s always around, and I’m wor ried that it will only worsen after Linda gets pregnant. I’ve always wanted a hahy, too, hut I’m not sure how I feel a k m t three- way parenting. I’ve found myself hoping Linda will fall in love with me and then change her mind ak>ut her arrange ment with David. T h a t’s probably jumping texi far ahead, anyway, because Linda and I have only had two dates. But would 1 he foolish to pursue a relationship with her? —Stella D D ear S tella : D ear ear M J o s . h n B eh a v io r : : Ellen and her girlfriend have clear ly forgotten who you are. If you go ring their dix>rbell wearing only a dia per and carrying a Kntle, they might remember how much you need them. T hen they’ll scoop you up in their arms and rcx:k you in a blanket, and you’ll feel much better. Most parents talk gibberish for the first two years of their baby’s lives and aren’t capable of normal adult conver sation until their child is old enough for kindergarten, j This is not some thing you can or should fight; you cannot win the bat tle against genetically programmed behavior. Perhaps you’ll feel more a part of the family if you become willing to take a role in the baby’s life. If being an uncle seems unappealing at first, maybe you can adjust to it gradual ly— or become an auntie instead. You’ll probably want to make some new friends, too, rather than waiting five or six years for Ellen to become more attentive. But you should know I that becoming totally baby-focused is j not exclusive to lesbian parents, lest you think the odds of becoming the center of the universe will improve if you find a straight woman to he your j mommy. A fter tw o dates you want Linda to change her m ind and alter her life plans? Most les bians d o n ’t dem and their girlfriends modify their lives until the fourth date, by w hich point you’d have more inform ation to determ ine w hether you have com patible appetites for music, sex and frxxL W hen you get involved with someone new, you need to imagine th at things will remain exactly as they are, rather th an assume that they’ll be modified to suit you. People change in all sorts of ways over time hut rarely in precisely the ways th at you hope or imagine. H inging your happiness on a particular change puts a huge strain on a relationship. D on’t pursue a relationship with Linda if you'll only he happy if she dumps David. He and his sperm are clearly at the center of her life right now, so you’ll need to figure out whether you can be happy with that arrangement. We don’t go out to bars, they don’t Invite me over to dinner, and I feel like Fve lost m y best friend. Why do lesbians forget that their other friends even exist as soon as they give birth? : D ear M s .
