A la DiFranco, Parry runs her own label, Ponygirl Records, and, like Olson, per- forms queer-inflected spoken word and folk music. She performs May 8 at Portland State University’s Take Back the Night and May 11 at the Mississippi Pizza Pub. Parry spoke with Just Out about her creative process, growing up Quaker, her new album and why she’ll sing as a giant maxi pad. Kelly Wallace: How did growing up Q uaker shape your political and worldviews? Evalyn Parry': Gave me a pretty hardcore left-wing perspective from a very young age! And taught me to speak my truth and he a leader. 1 think very early on 1 internalized the notion that our place in the world as humans is essentially about working for justice and equality for every one. I definitely see my art as an extension of that; it’s my way of speaking truth to power. KW: O n your Web site you write, “ It was during university that I started writing with performance in mind: personal monologues, comedy and performance poetry.” Can you describe what that process was like? EP: I was studying acting at university, hut I started to realize I wasn’t satisfied by just saying other people’s words; 1 had so many things I wanted to say myself. So I started to write and perform my own words, and people laughed, and that was so fun! 1 wanted to make them laugh again, and I discovered 1 like being myself on stage more than I like trying to be someone else. KW: Tell me about the album you just released in M arch. KW: W hat was your motivation for w rit ing the song “ Always” ? EP: This incredible advertisement I came across for Always maxi pads, advertising one of their new products with the slogan “Being a woman just got better!” And 1 was like, well, no kidding.. .and 1 started to imagine how I could dress up as a pad and sing from her per spective about how great it is to he a woman, and 1 got this little jazzy tune in my head...and “Always" was horn. I feel like every level of my being got expanded.... Now that it’s made, I hope the result feeds and nourishes and inspires those who listen to it. The first album, Things That Should Be Warn ings, was simpler, fewer instruments and musi cians, less “production,” and 1 feel the songwrit- ing, the craft was less developed. This second album is the next step! I got to work with an incredible producer this time around— Ken Whiteley— he really challenged and inspired me and brought so many new ideas to the tahle.
