( >o iii f ever there was a recipe for seduction, food is certainly a key ingredient. And what better food to entice than dessert—the grand finale, the climax of all great meals. Impress your date (or hell, seduce yourself!) with the sweet gems these Southeast cafes have to offer. 4 Local organic beer, wine, & fresh juices P O R T LA N D P R IC E S IN STEA D OF C H IC A G O 'S *•.:?••• Cafe Castagna • 1758 SJL Hawthorne Bhrd. he “daughter” of next-door Castagna, this fine bistro boasts the same high-quality food of its foremother. Top off a gourmet hamburger and fries or an authentic Caesar salad with the many pleasing desserts offered. For you chocolate fiends, there is always a tone to win you over; if it’s fruit that floats your boat, the homemade and seasonal sorbets can’t he heat. But the real treat at the cafe is the affogato, a simple hut elegant treat that melts in your mouth. Here it’s a homemade vanilla gelato topped with hot espresso. It’s that sim ple. Is it a food? A drink? Call it what you want, hut don’t miss this bittersweet, hot/cold combo that truly is the champagne of all desserts. Pied Cow • 3244 S.E. Belmont SL he Pied Cow is a veritable Portland landmark. During the spring and summer, i this old home-tumed-cafe is a bohemian paradise. Enjoy the secluded garden area for a late-night cheese plate, a cup of tea or the newest treat—a Turkish water pipe served with fruit-flavored tobacco. Mead, port and other dessert wines complement the extensive dessert selection of ice cream, cakes and tarts. The real standout here is the warm gingerbread cake. While many are too spicy and dry, the Pied Cow’s version is moist, mild and absolutely to die for. Served with fresh whipped cream, this is what 1 call heaven on earth. T Stumptown Coffee • 3356 S.L Belmont SL he main attraction at this Belmont haunt is obviously coffee. But don’t ignore the vegan German chocolate cake sitting on the counter as you pay. The vegans have found the secret to moist cakes (is it applesauce?), and this chocolate, caramel and coconut extravaganza is the perfect sidekick to the best cup of joe you will ever have. You’ll he lucky if you find a seat here, so I suggest getting your cake to go. Whether you are indulging yourself with an afternoon work break, rounding out a nice home-cooked dinner or curling up to watch Six Feet Under, Stumptown’s German chocolate is your best friend.
