From this fundamental belief comes the first-ever Enteractive Language Fes tival, a monthlong production constructed to redefine our concept of language. Continuing through Nov. 29 and featuring more than 75 acclaimed artists, the festival is a dream come true for organizers Lisa Newman and Llewyn Mdire. “We’ve always wanted to do this,” says Maire. “It came about from a desire to connect artists whose work bridged common themes. We wanted internationally known musicians, performers and filmmakers to see what local folks were doing and vice versa." As a result, Portland is the fortunate host to a bridging of art and language that challenges the social constructs of language, gender and identity. 2 Gyrlz is a nonprofit that endeavors to promote local and international artists by way of presenting public events and educational programming. Their fire is fueled by an all-volunteer staff and board of directors. Though performance is a major focus, they also sponsor the Fuego Project, which works with youth and cultural preservation, and publish 2 Gyrlz Quarterly, a Portland-based magazine and D arby Web site covering performance art, music, litera ture and other cultural scenes throughout Oregon. Their main media focus involves coverage of underserved forms, genres and artist communities. Tired of the underrepresentation of the regions most interesting cultural work by the mainstream media, 2 Gyrlz has become the media that will. T he history of 2 Gyrlz is a study in dedication. In 1995 Lisa Newman began her work as an intern at Eugene’s Tuto Girls Review, an experimental arts journal. Two Girls branched into a performance-based resource in order to financially support the jour nal’s publication. Between 1995 and 1997, the group played host to local and international artists including Annie Sprinkle, queer performance artist/activist Drew Pisarra, photographers Joel- Peter Witkin and Andres Serrano, gender outlaw Kate Bomstein and the late, great Kathy Acker. “This was the first time I had seen perform ance art,” exclaims Newman, “and it complete ly blew my mind.” She has since written and performed in more than a dozen works throughout the Pacific North west as well as the Cleveland Performance Arts Festival.
