Presenters in clude Stacey Sobel o f the Center for G ay and Lesbian C ivil Rights and Shannon M inter of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (2:15 to 3:45 p.m. Nov. 8, Clackamas- Lower Level). n addition to racism, Creating Change will address a number of other provocative topics: • Campus: “Is It Safe to Be Queer (in C am pus? Results of the National LG BT Campus Climate Assessment” will discuss some of the key findings of this report, the impact of sexual minority resource programs and the major chal lenges for queers in academics. Presenters include Susan Rankin of Pennsylvania State University and Gwendolyn Alden Dean of Cor nell University (2:15 to 3:45 p.m. Nov. 8, Clark- Lower Level). • Economics: “You Better Work” will help participants clearly understand the intersections of queer oppression and economic exploitation. Through a combination of formal and interactive presentations, the workshop will demonstrate not only the effects of social and economic justice hut also explore the links between gender expression and globalization. Presented by Akiba Timoya and Kara Keeling of Southerners on New Ground (6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, Clark-Lower Level). • Gender: “Playing Doctor: Renaming Desire” will focus on the fears and desires about sex between trans and nontrans people. This will be an opportunity to talk honestly about identi ties, gender roles, assumptions and limitations in an atmosphere of openness and clarity. Presenters include Sunsong Firedancer of Portland State University Queers and Allies (7:45 to 9 p.m. Nov. 9, Yakima-Lower Level). • H IV /A ID S: “Audits, Abstinence and Sex Panic: The Bush Administration and HIV/AIDS” will address the White House’s pro motion of abstinence-only education and its audit of allegedly “pornographic" safe-sex efforts. Presenters include Ernest C. Hopkins of the San Francisco A ID S Foundation and Ana Oliveira of the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (7:45 to 9 p.m. Nov. 9, Glisan-Mt. Bachelor Wing). • Marriage: “Marriage: Why and How!” will discuss the current status of fighting for mar riage; how marriage differs from civil unions and domestic partnership; the harms faced by same- sex couples who are denied the legal, economic and societal protections of marriage; and how you can help educate locally. Presenters include Bob Pileggi and Jon Davidson of Lambda Legal Education and [3efen.se Fund (2:15 to 3:45 p.m. Nov. 8, Deschutes-Lower Level). • Organizing: “How to Obey Without G et ting Whipped: Lobbying Rules for Nonprofits” will discuss the tax status and advocacy poten tial of 501(c)3s, 501(c)4s and political action committees and will define the difference between direct and grassroots lobbying. Stops include everything from the Boxxes/Brig/Fish Grotto/Panorama complex to Haven, a new lesbian-owned coffeehouse in Southeast Portland. Many locations will have drink or other discounts for bus riders. The first of four chartered buses will depart Jantzen Beach starting at 7 p.m. The first bus will take riders to the Rose City Gay Freedom Band’s con cert at Rose City Park United Methodist Church, 5830 N.E. Alameda St. General service will begin at 8 p.m., as the first of the four buses departs Jantzen Beach and heads into town. They will circulate at half-hour intervals and make their final round at 2:30 a.m., traversing the route, picking up and dropping off party people, and stopping only at sponsoring businesses. Locals can catch the bus at any of the stops and purchase a ticket, gcxxl for the entire night, and join the party hopping.
