Based on the most recent research, the ses sion will address many related topics, including documenting the problem, denial in the broad er society and within the lesbian community, survivors’ actions and needs, programming and agency issues, language and outreach recom mendations. A n open discussion will follow. A gency P resents A ward he Community Health Partnership pre- I sented the 2002 Public H ealth Genius Award to Lori Buckwalter during a breakfast meeting Oct. 10 at the M ultnomah A thletic Club. The executive director of It’s Time, O re gon! received an unrestricted award of $5,000 “for her compassion, dedication, achievement and commitment to social justice in behalf of transgendered people in the city of Portland and elsewhere,” chairman Paul Cosgrove said. Agency officials report her advocacy has October IB, 2002 resulted in lasting changes to both local and national law enforcement and public safety initia tives, public health policies and civil rights ordi nances. They say her volunteer work has made a profound difference in the dignity, health and safety of individuals and the entire community. Buckwalter played a key role in working with both the city of Portland and M ultnomah County to expand civil rights protections to cover gender identity. She is employed by Kaiser Permanente, where she has made substantial contributions to the company’s handbook on Culturally Competent Care: Lesbian, Gay, Bisex ual and Transgendered Population. In presenting the award, M ultnomah C oun ty Commissioner Serena Cruz said: “Sometimes we are lucky enough to have a citizen who can illuminate a problem and who will work with government and the community to create a remedy.... Buckwalter has taken the private injustices and discrim ination that she had endured and channeled her passion towards establishing rights and protections for others who face the same discrimination.” Buckwalter is donating half of her $5,000 award to Outside In, a Portland agency support ing homeless and runaway youth, particularly queer kids. Powell’s Books responded by m atch ing the gift of $2,500 to the nonprofit, and sex reassignment surgeon Toby Meltzer’s office made a contribution as well. C o u n ty C reates C ultural C ommittee ultnomah County Commissioner Maria Rojo de Steffey recently appointed mem bers to the new Cultural Coalition Planning Committee, which will be responsible for “set- M 11 ting up guidelines for future arts representa tion” in the region and “ensuring humanities” for O regon’s future, said member Tony Stroh, Portland Gay M en’s Chorus execu tive director. W ith 15 representa tives from various arts, heritage and hum ani ties organizations, the com m ittee will be developing guidelines for delegating money from the Oregon C ul tural Trust, which aims to raise significant new funds to invest into the state’s arts, humanities and heritage. The plan was launched when Gov.
