A ttorney at Law T riangle G roup A nnounces P ublic H istory T ours V he Burnside Triangle Advisory Group will play host to two public tours highlighting more than 100 years of gay and lesbian history in the neighborhood from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 and 29. Interested parties are asked to gather just prior to the start time outside Ringlers Pub at the com er of Southwest 14th Avenue and West Burnside. The tours are free, open to the public and wheelchair accessible. The advisory group, organized by the Metro politan Human Rights Center, will advise the city on redevelopment plans for Portland’s historic gay district. It is a citizen-led effort to share ideas and concerns in the West End redevelopment efforts specific to the Burnside Triangle. The group is seeking improvements such as more trees and foliage to give the area more of a daytime walkway feel and an atmosphere that eventually might lead to closing Southwest Stark Street on weekends for festivals and pedestrian-only use. The committee plans on hitting South east Hawthorne Boulevard and Belmont Street, Northeast Broadway, Northwest 23rd Avenue, the Pearl District and any other appropriate areas. I ntersex A ctivist A ttends S ummit ore than 300 people attended the Lesbian, N g i t Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Health Summit 2002 from Aug. 21 to 25 in Boulder, Colo. It was the first sexual minority health gathering at which hi, trans and intesex issues were a major focus. A conference session was devoted to inter sex issues and why they matter to the queer health movement. Intcrsex advocates oppose surgery to correct infants bom with indetermi nate genitalia and urge an end to the secrecy and shame that surround the diagnosis of an intersex condition. W hile some queer participants value inter sex inclusion believing it encourages a nonbi nary view of sex and gender, Portland activist Emi Koyama of the Intersex Society of N orth A m erica emphasized that she is no t arguing for the abolition of gender or th at children w ith intersex co n d itio n s should n o t be assigned a gender at birth.
