the 2002 N ational G ay and Lesbian Task Force
Leadership Award on Sept. 17 in Los Angeles.
T he honor was established in 1989 to recognize
sexual minorities and straight allies who have
made unparalleled contributions to advancem ent
o f freedom and equality for the queer community.

special guests during Basic R ights O regon ’s
A nnual D inner on Sept. 13 at the H ilton Port­

fund-raising drive for an urgent building repair
pro ject. T h e h istoric facility is located at
2400 N .E . Broadway.
“W e have patched and plugged as much as
we can, hut we now need to engage in an exten ­
sive roof replacem ent and make other badly
needed repairs to the building’s exterior,” said
the Rev. M ichael N ikolaus, M C C Portland
interim pastor. “ It is critical that we do this
before the fall rains return to our city.”
T h e cam paign, “ How Dry I A m : T h e U n ­
holy R o o f and Exterior R enovation Project,"
aim s to raise $35,000 in order to proceed with
the repairs, which will cost about $55,000. A
gift o f $20,000 already has been promised.
A n opening reception will he held from 7:30
to 9 p.m. A ug. 6 at the Peace House, 2116 N .E.
18th Ave. Hors d ’oeuvres, beverages and enter­
tainm ent will he provided.
