Y outh of C olor O rganize ove Makes a Family and Brother to Brother recently launched the Queer Youth of Color support group. It replaces Rainbow Youth, the only program of its kind in Multnomah County, which was discontin L ued at the end of the summer when it lost the support of its sponsoring agency. Sexual minority and questioning youth of color, their allies and representatives of agen cies serving them are invited to a planning m eeting from 3 to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 in Room 256 at Union Station, 800 N.W. Sixth Ave. Food and drinks will be provided. The new project will be staffed by Des Ander son, Love Makes a Family youth and schools organizer, and Stephan Herrera, Brother to Brother HIV and youth coordinator. Both worked with Rainbow Youth during the past year. “ It’s unacceptable to abandon these youth,” Anderson says. “We were just begin ning to establish a supportive, safe environ ment for queer and questioning youth of color. W hen the group was disbanded, the youth were left with no support.” The new project will support the youth in setting and carrying out their own programs. “Our job is to bring the youth hack together so that their voice can be heard by the communi ty," Herrera says. The event will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Amazon Community Center, 2700 Hilyard St. in Eugene. The gathering will feature a free workshop led by Eliza Roaringsprings, director of Encore Theatre. However, no experience is needed, and no performing will he expected. Organizers say the event will be a great opportunity to promote connection, inspiration and fun. They hope people will get to know each other, get energized and have a few laughs together, too. The team’s mission is to make schools safe and fair for everyone regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. It provides community events, T U .S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, the first openly lesbian member of Congress, will be in town Nov. 4 for a fund-raiser aimed at curbing urban sprawl. T he event will benefit both the Wisconsin Democrat’s campaign for re-election as well as the Com m ittee for a Livable Future. It will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Natural Capital Center, 721 N.W. Ninth Ave. The committee, founded in 1996 by U .S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., is part of a national effort to reorganize how the federal government spends money, makes decisions and organizes growth to ensure healthy and safe metropolitan areas. During its first four years of operation, it has assisted more than 50 candidates in their congressional elections.
