D e a r M s . B e h a v io r :
My best friend
(and longtime ex)
Jim is happy in a new
relationship with a
man also named Jim.
My Jim has had a
lifelong problem with
debt, including school
loans and credit cards
up the wazoo. He
often has sought my
help with budgets and
organization.
The two Jims
have been together
for a year. They are
happy, have bought real estate and
have merged like lesbians.
My Jim is particularly happy
because his boyfriend, a stockbroker, is
richer than God. He doesn’t seem to
have a single problem anymore and is
basically very content, 1 presume
because his boyfriend has paid off his
debts; bought the new home, furniture
and lifestyle; and basically created a
comfy nest for the two of them.
Here’s the problem. My Jim owes
me $7,000 from loans through the
years. Because 1 never in a million
years thought he’d be
able to pay it back, I for
gave him the loan.
Is it OK for me to
have a frank talk with
Jim about the money
and his new situation? It
seems indelicate to point
out his newfound stand
ing as a rich househus-
band, yet if his new Jim
is paying people off, why
shouldn’t he pay me?
How can I explain that 1
forgave him the loan because 1 never
thtxight he’d have two pennies to rub
together?
Please don’t tell me to let it go;
$7,000 is a lot of money!! I want the
money and the friendship with both
of the Jims.

Lucky thing Jim’s desperation took
the form of being broke. Imagine if
he’d had kidney failure and you’d
helped him out!
Ms. Behavior envisions your con
versation: “Jim, 1 never guessed you’d
land a boyfriend with two perfectly
functioning kidneys. Isn’t it time we
contacted a surgeon to retrieve mine?”
Because you forgave Jim the loan,
standing in line with your hand out
would seem tacky. If you insist on dis
cussing it, tell him simply and directly
that if he’s ever in a position to repay
you, it would help you. But do not act
resentful when the Jims fly to European
health spas, and do not cry when they
visit wearing matching Rolexes.
If you do talk about it, say it once
and never bring it up again. Think of
it like this: If Jim hadn’t had anything
nice to wear and you’d donated your
favorite frock to his limited wardrobe,
you might feel stir
rings of longing for it
back once Jim
snagged a fabulous
Parisian designer who
filled his closet with
stunning outfits. But
even then you only
could notify him of
your feelings tasteful
ly: “Jim, if you some
day find that you
don’t actually need
that slimming black
velvet and lace gown,
and it’s just taking up
space in your closet, I
wouldn’t mind having it back.”
Money is, of course, a little tricki
er. It takes up little space and is not
necessarily irreplaceable, and the
question of need vs. desire is not
clear-cut.
Only when pressed, for example,
will Ms. Behavior reveal that her
desire for a pair of Manolo Blahnik
shoes might he lower priority than her
need for Pan-Asian food, world peace
and oral sex. (She declines to com
ment, however, on comfortable shoes
vs. tribadism.)
D e a r M s . B e h a v io r :
Tonight my wife,
“Brenda,” has gone on a
date with another
woman. I’ve agreed to it,
but I don’t approve. She
has said recently that
she loves me “millions”
and wants to spend the
rest of her life with me
but that at this moment
in time she doesn’t
“fancy” me.
She met this girl about six weeks
ago. She assured me this is only a fan
tasy or experiment. What should I do?
— R ita
D ear R
it a :
Stop agreeing to things that make
you feel had. They only will twist you
and your relationship into a pretzel.
You can’t keep Brenda happy by
agreeing to let her date someone else.
She thinks she can keep you hooked
by saying she wants to spend “the rest
of her life” with you— at least the part
that happens when she’s not at the
movies or in a bubble hath with
another woman.
Grow a backbone, and tell her
what you want. Then, if it doesn’t
work out between you and Brenda,
toss her gently to the curb*. At least
you won’t have to blame yourself for
having been a spineless jellyfish.
* “Toss her to the curb” is a
metaphor for breaking up. Ms.
Behavior added “gently” to further
clarify, so she won’t receive angry let
ters from people who mistakenly think
she advocates spousal abuse. JT1
