The survey also indicates increased accep tance among U.S. citizens of homosexuality as well as slight erosion in their reluctance to sup port the extension of marriage benefits to gay and lesbian couples. A total of 85 percent of the people polled support equal opportunity in the workplace. In addition, 54 percent say homosexual rela tions between consenting adults should be legal, while 52 percent say homosexuality is an acceptable “alternative lifestyle.” Further, 44 percent favor allowing homosexual couples to form civil unions and receive some legal rights of married couples, according to the poll, con ducted in mid-May. The most dramatic shift in public opinion is the increase in perception that homosexuality is biologically based. For the first time in the 24 years Gallup has asked the question, an equal number of respondents say homosexuality is something a per son is bom with as those who think it is environ mental. In light of the results, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network called for consistent and complete implementation of policies to prevent the debil itating amounts of harassment that affect all stu dents, including those who are queer. “Despite the fact that 96 percent of schools have put sexual harassment policies in place, there is a failure for those schools to enforce those policies in a way that truly protects all stu dents,” executive director Kevin Jennings said. “Public schools continue to create a culture of harassment, which can have damaging effects on all youth, including GLBT youth. We com mend AAUW for bringing attention to this per vasive problem and for holding public schools accountable for addressing it, in accordance with the law.” The association, which promotes education and equity for all women and girls, initially con ducted the first-of-its-kind research on secondary school sexual harassment in 1993.
