I wanted to share with you and your readers the range o f business responses to activist concerns over Wil lamette Week's hate-mongering. • U .S. Bank, which typically has placed a half-page ad in Willamette Week, no longer will advertise in the publication. “We will not be placing any more product with W illamette Week," said Karen M cShane o f U .S . Bank’s mar keting department in a phone conversation Feb. 8. She expressed U .S . Bank’s appreciation for being made aware o f the situation. • Rejuvenation House Parts’ M adelyn Innis, the employee handling advertising for that firm: “Thank you for expressing your concern. 1 hap pened to miss those particular com m ents in Wil lamette Week, but I too share your concern. I don’t think they’re very professional at all, and I expressed our thoughts to the Willamette Week representative.... Thank you on behalf o f our company.” • River C ity Bicycles: “We understand your concerns and will take them under consideration when we discuss our future advertising plans.” • A nd then there are firms that apparently have not bothered to respond, including N ature’s Northwest, Qwest and the M ountain Shop. Ultimately, the responsibility for whether hate-mongering and espousing violence will be tolerated in Portland rests with the citizens, for as Emile Zola wrote in denouncing the French government’s anti-Sem itic defam ation and per secution o f Louis Dreyfuss, “ I will not be an David W.
