The Portland Gay M en’s Chorus is the nation’s fourth-oldest gay-identified chorus
he Portland Gay Men’s Chorus announced
1 Jan. 29 that it is the recipient of a $136,000
grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust.
The three-year grant will fund the position
of a full-time executive director for the chorus.
The award is historic, according to Ken Cole,
executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Asso
ciation of Choruses, an international associa
tion representing more than 190 choruses and
10,000 singers.
"We believe this is the largest single grant
ever made to a gay and lesbian chorus,” he
said. "We are very excited for the Portland
Gay M en’s Chorus and the recognition this
grant signifies.”
The grant also is significant because it is the
first award by the Meyer Memorial Trust to a
gay-identified organization.
“This is the first time we have made an
award to an organization with the word ‘gay’ in
their title,” said Victor Merced, Meyer Memori
al Trust program officer. “We were very
impressed by the mission and achievements of
the Portland Gay M en’s Chorus, and we are
pleased to extend to them this grant.”
T he Meyer Memorial Trust is one of the
largest foundations in the Pacific Northwest
and ranks in the top 100 foundations in size
nationally. Its assets total more th an $540
million.

In 1977, the couple co-founded the Port
land chapter of Parents of Gays, which later
became affiliated with the national organiza
tion Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians
and Gays. U ntil his death in 1995, Bill Shep
herd provided low-cost legal counseling to
same-sex couples who wanted to ensure their
partners’ optimal decision-making and inheri
tance rights.
In 1985, the couple received the prestigious
Lucille Hart Award from Right to Privacy. In
1997, A nn Shepherd became the namesake and
the first recipient of Metropolitan Community
Church’s Shepherd’s Award.
Also that year, she received the Oregon Gay
and Lesbian Legal A ssociation’s Lifetime
Achievement Award. The Northwest District of
the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Com
munity Churches awarded her its 2000 Human
Kathy Beige
Rights Award, and the Imperial Sovereign Rose
Court invested her with the title of Immortal
Legend of Diversity last December.
Shepherd suffered a serious stroke in late
November but recovered quickly. Her daughter
says she now is living at home without the need
for any health care assistance. This year’s grand
marshal celebrated her 82nd birthday in late
December.
