A queer arts patron recently said about the Pat Graney Company, “It’s one of the few troupes that employs dancers who aren’t anorexic.” The Seattle-based group is on an international tour with its new show, Tattoo, which plays Jan. 19 and 20 at Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall. Graney, considered one of the country’s best modem choreogra phers, spent three years creating Tattoo, which explores the relationship between humans and nature, including technology’s influence on the modem world. Her company leads workshops in schools throughout Washington state and has developed the groundbreaking Keeping the Faith Prison Project, which is designed to pro vide positive experiences for incarcerated women and girls through movement, drama and performance. Misha Portland punkers picked T he Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has announced the nominees for its 12th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which will he presented in four ceremonies to he held during the next several months. Nominated for Outstanding Music Album is All Hands on the Bad One by Portland’s own Sleater-Kinney. Their competition con sists of Janis lan, k.d. lang, Stephen Gately and Patty Larkin. GLAAD also announced special recognition for three programs: CBS’ Survivor, with its very openly gay big winner, Richard Hatch; NBC’s The West Wmg, which regularly addresses issues of dis crimination against the lesbian and gay communi ty; and Equality Rocks, the concert that stemmed from last year’s March on Washington, D.C., to promote equal rights for gays and lesbians. The GLAAD Media Awards were created to honor individuals and projects in the media and entertainment industries for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender commu nity and the issues that affect their lives.
