But according to local activist M’Lynn Hartwell, an officer claimed the city was violat ing his First Amendment rights by forcing him to drive a patrol unit with a rainbow sticker— which he considered a political statement— attached to it. She said conservative Christian organizations then stepped in and offered to pro vide whatever legal services were required to support his assertion. “Rather than pit the city against the Ameri can Family Association, the city attorney rec ommended removal of the stickers from city vehicles," Hartwell said. “Many employees of Traverse City have chosen to place rainbow bumper stickers on their personal vehicles...in protest of the...decision.” Hartwell said demand for the undistrib uted bumper stickers, which remain closeted somewhere downtown, has been overwhelm ing. Her organization, We Are Traverse City, is planning to print additional rainbows. Direct questions and comments to WeAreTC@TraverseArea.com, or send finan cial donations to RO. Staffed by well-trained and compassionate volunteers, the anonymous hot line is the only national organization of its kind in the country. More than 100,000 calls are placed to it each year from teens and adults in all 50 states. “Our approach is to help callers focus on their feelings rather than for us to tell them how to solve their problems,” hot line execu tive director Brad Becker said. “By talking to a caller about the issues they are facing, it is often the first step in their ability to come to an understanding and comfort with the way they want to live their lives. Callers can also get information on groups and organizations of every imaginable type— social, support, politi cal, religious, athletic and professional— plus gay-friendly businesses, doctors, lawyers and counselors.” Hot line volunteers have access to a national database containing more than 18,000 listings— the largest resource of its kind in the world and still growing.
