O ’Leary, Gay and Lesbian Medical Association executive direc tor, said she was hopeful that the former Wis consin governor will be sensitive to existing health disparities for sexual minorities. “Because of the lack of equal status in the various state and national legal systems, it is critical that Mr. Thompson follow the spirit of President-elect George Bush’s pledge that he is ‘president of all the people,’ ” she said. “It is paramount that if no children are to be left behind, as the new president has said time and time again, that the new H H S secretary under stand that the statement includes L G B T youth and children of gay and lesbian families as well.” In the past few years, O ’Leary said, the associa tion has worked closely with the department to level the playing field Tommy Thompson with regard to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender health. “We have helped define the health needs for the LGBT population, and we have identified the most critical areas for research.” The association also has been part of the development of the current federal health plan, a 10-year blueprint that focuses on the elimination of health disparities in the nation along racial, ethnic, regional, gender, age and sexual orientation lines. “There is so much more to be done, and we see no reason that this sort of constructive partnership cannot contin ue,” O ’Leary said.
