aprii 21.2000 », front, because “gays and lesbians don’t breed unintentionally.” When the spokesperson murmured the usual liberal line about being gay-friendly, Jack pinned her to the wall, asking her if some of her best friends are gay. Flustered, she said, well, yes, she did know some. So Jack demand ed that she name a friend who is a lesbian. After some painful pauses, she finally stam mered out a name, but then quickly spat out several names of straight friends when Jack asked for those. One of Jack’s current concerns is the reinvigorated OCA. “I think the proposed initiative is frighten ing, because it’s targeting our youth, and these kids need a lot of support,” she says. Perhaps the issue hits close to home because this boisterous booster is also a mom. As is obvious from her still-thick accent, Jack hales from Massachusetts, though she came to Port land with her daughter 20 years ago. So what happened to her former name along the way? "I fell in love four and a half years ago with a woman who didn’t want to be involved with Linda Shirley,” she explains. “Linda was a total jack-off,” she admits, allowing that she had quite a bad rep. So she decided to change her name so her honey wouldn’t have to be involved with Linda Shirley. “It was a declaration of love,” she says, going all mushy. Her family now includes her partner, Brigitte Sarabi, a duck, four chickens, two cats, a dog and one daughter apiece. Jack started out at KBOO in the early 1980s with the Woman Soul program. “One of the things I’m most proud about,” she says, “is that my daughter Coyote has seen this is a good thing to get involved with. I’ve dragged her here since she was 10.” Like mother, like daughter... —OG t is 9:58 p.m. on a Sunday night, and Jack’s daughter, Coyote Days, clad in a black sweatshirt and sporting punk pigtails, is flip ping through a short stack of records. Tammy Heuer sits nearby, her long brown strands framing a contented, deadpan expres sion. She adjusts her headpones and mike, and watches as the clock ticks steadily toward 10. These DJs are preparing to launch into the latest edition of Woman Soul, a KBOO radio show dedicated to all types of women’s music. The two-hour show is run as a collective; Days and Heuer broadcast on the second and fourth Sundays of every month, and a small group of other women share the remaining time slots. Though some of the Woman Sou/ DJs dedi cate their shows to folksy musicians, rock ’n’ roll rules the airwaves when Days and Heuer work the turntables. They commit to playing local women rockers, many of whom are queer, but they aren’t ashamed to spin a few ’80s jams when the mood is right. In fact, a “typical” set could include artists ranging from the Need to Patsy Cline, Le Tigre to Phranc, and the Butchies to Cindy Lauper. “People are stoked to hear music like this,” Days says. “We want the show to be accessible, but we want to be able to play the things that aren’t played anywhere else.” In addition to playing recorded women’s music, the DJs have recently added live perfor mances to their show. An impressive lineup of acts is in the works—Days and Heuer have asked Sarah Dougher, Lois, and the All Girl Summer Fun Band to play, among others. Supporting any great movement is solid infrastructure. Days and Heuer have turned their KBOO time slot into a durable building block for women musicians everywhere—as Heuer says, the novelty of women in rock will disappear “when it’s not such a threat for a woman to have a voice.” —KD IN THE MOOD FOR SPRING CLEANIN6? - WE ARE !
