Sisterhands is a partnership between the YWCA Encoreplus Program, All Women’s Health Services and Phoenix Rising Foundation. Small group sessions at Phoenix Rising will educate participants and provide them with the emotional support they need to seek out screen ings for breast and cervical cancer. All Women’s Health Services will provide health screenings at its lesbian-friendly clinic. Sisterhands will provide vouchers for free women’s health checks and mammograms to women aged 40 and older who meet financial eligibility requirements and have no insurance or are underinsured. For more information, call Marcie at 294'7413. radley-Angle House is looking for volun teers to do direct service work, including answering its 24-hour crisis line, staffing its emergency shelter and transitional houses, working with children’s groups, and serving on its board of directors. P hoenix R ising A ward to H onor K eeney hoenix Rising Foundation’s fourth annual Jack Abele Award Dinner will be held June 19 at the Portland Hilton, 921 S.W. Sixth Ave. The dinner and award are named after Jack Abele, who died in 1995. He and his life part ner, Warren James, were active in gay and les bian issues for more than 20 years. Abele sup ported Phoenix Rising, Cascade AIDS Project and the American Civil Liberties Union, among other groups. The Jack Abele Award acknowledges a per son who has given outstanding service to the sexual minority community of Oregon and Southwest Washington. This year’s honoree is Portland activist and attorney Karen Keeney. Keeney joined the Right to Privacy (now Right to Pride) PAC board in 1989 and was one of the founders of Right to Privacy Inc. She is also a founder of Equity Foundation, serving as its board chair from 1989 through 1992 and as co-chair in 1993 and again this year. In 1992, she was the first out lesbian to be elected as a delegate from Oregon to the Democratic National Convention. The event begins with no-host cocktails and a silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by dinner. Music will be provided by Four in Hand, a women’s quartet from Corvallis. Phoenix Rising Foundation is a Portland based nonprofit organization that promotes the interests of sexual minorities through mental health, education and other support services. Tickets are $75.
