THE NETHERLANDS The government of Utrecht is in the midst of a two-month extravaganza of queer films, theater, visual arts, music, street art, literature, sports and dance. The project is designed to show the richness and diversity of queer culture in hopes of reducing discrimination. The city also brought to town sexual minority groups from Utrecht’s sister cities—Bmo, Czech Republic, and Len, Nicaragua. Throughout the two months, the bells of Utrecht Dom tower—the city’s highest church tower— are playing a specially composed "Pink Spring” song hourly. Utrecht is a longtime member of the Interna tional Lesbian and Gay Association. NEW ZEALAND New Zealand is considering changes to its discriminatory immigration policy. At present, foreign spouses are granted immediate residency, while foreign “de facto” spouses must wait two years and foreign gay and lesbian partners must wait four years. Sexual minority activists are pushing for a standardized law and ask that letters on the matter be sent to the Honorable Max Bradford, Minister of Immigration, Parliament House, Wellington, New Zealand. Banana, 61, was sued for $115,000 on April 10 by a policeman aide who says Banana raped him and forced him into a three-year sexual relation ship from 1983 to ’86. The policeman, Jefta Duba, 35, is now in prison, convicted in February of the 1995 killing of a fellow cop who allegedly had called him “Banana’s wife.” During Duba’s trial, former Senior Assis tant Police Commissioner John Chademana said there had been “numerous intelligence reports” on Banana that made Duba’s story believable. Since the lawsuit was filed, allegations have begun “pouring in” from former students at the University of Zimbabwe (where Banana, a Meth odist minister, chairs the religion department) and state security personnel, police said. The authorities are also investigating four high- ranking officials who allegedly knew of com plaints against Banana but took no action because he was president. Banana is married with four children. He was president from 1980 to ’87, while current Presi dent Robert Mugabe—who is strongly anti-gay— was prime minister. Banana has remained a key figure in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front party.
