Knitting Factory Works’ media kit en courages one to “listen to Suck Pretty while chopping wood in a pink g-string.” Well, since I neither chop wood (um, it’s summer), nor do I own a pink g-string (black, leopard print and purple, but definitely NOT pink), I opted to listen to this CD after a particu larly pissy day at work. Cochran’s rage-ridden vocals and guitar riffing did this tired girl some good that day. M arla G len C a t ie C u r t is Love and Respect • Zoo Entertainment Watch out for this butch crooner, she’ll melt anyone with her smoky and whiskey-steeped vocals. The sad thing is, she’s now a Parisienne after leaving her native Chicago years ago. The good thing is, she speaks French (yum!). Those language skills can be attributed to her involve ment with blues-jazz legend Nina Simone, who also was instrumental in inspiring her to begin a career in music. Glen definitely has a unique voice that successfully blends the styles of Marvin Gaye, James Brown and Tina Turner, while maintaining her own personality in each song. It’s also refreshing to hear an artist that has her own style without succumbing to the current popularity of dance and high-en ergy, “boom! boom! boom!” mu sic. As she’s already famous in Europe (she was on the front cover of the German version of Rolling Stone), and an out dyke there as well, it’ll be interesting to see how Zoo Entertainment’s U.S. counter parts market her. After listening to her CD over and over—without ever getting tired of doing so— I’m sold! Truth from Lies • Guardian As I was listening to this CD in my car on a late-morning drive from Seattle to Portland, I almost fell asleep. That actually says a lot about this latest release from Curtis. Sounding very close to Sarah McLachlan (which explains my drowsiness— I usually listen to Sarah before go ing to bed), Catie’s got some OK songs, but after a while, everything seems to sound the same (or maybe that was just 1-5 on a dreary day). Ultra Lounge is a six- volume collection of CDs contain ing re-releases of those kitschy tunes that are regaining popularity with the rise of the “Cocktail Na tion” and bands like Pink Martini. Catie Curtis It’s that Nancy Sinatra-type sing ing, with a drum beat to match. It’s a retro space- age Jetsons-type sound. It’s like The Ed Sullivan Show on your stereo.
