On June 13, 1989, Washington’s Corcoj^n Gallery canceled a planned exhibit by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. A few of the photographs to be shown depicted homoerotic or S/M activity, and conservative^, such as Senator Jesse Helms bellowed their disapproval. Mapplethorpe had died three months earlier; his career took off anyway. Ibania finally repealed its sodomy laws, yet everyday life remains rigidly controlled by the communist government. The first gay organiza tion, the small Gay Albania Society, formed June 6, 1994. Despite official persecution, leaders were optimistic. There are many homo sexuals in Albania,' the group's president said. 'Maybe even dozens.' Remember typewriters? Under the pseudonym Lisa Ben (an anagram of 'lesbian'), Edythe Eyde published the premier issue of Vice-Versa, the first U.S. lesbian magazine, in June of 1947. Eyde typed each issue manually, making seven carbons with each retyping, during her lunch break at RKO studios.
