A few days later they burned an estimated twelve thousand books and other documents. Many irreplaceable items were lost, including unpublished manuscripts by Karl Ulrichs and Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Germany's early gay rights movement was dead. May 15,1897: Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld founds the Scientific Humanitarian Committee in Berlin. Its goals were to abolish sodomy laws, to educate the public about homosexuality, and to organize gay people. J May 19, 1930-Jan. 12, 1965 With the production of A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry became the first black woman to have a drama produced on the Broadway stage. Hansberry, who showed a lifelong commitment to civil rights for all people, once wrote that ’homosexual persecution and condemnation has at its roots not only social ignorance, b u t... anti-feminist dogma.’ Her promising career was cut short by cancer at age thirty-four. Aaron Fricke took a gay date to his high school prom in Rhode Island on May 30, 1980, though it took a court order before he could do so. His book Reflections o f a Rock Lobster has provided encouragement for hundreds of thousands of gay teenagers.
