The partnership agreement between the sexual minority community and the Portland Police Bureau was signed on National Coming Out Day, Oct. 11. The agreement was drafted by Assistant Chief Dan Noe lie and William Warren, a member o f the Sexual Minority Roundtable and the C hief s Forum. The fin a l draft was approved and signed by everyone on the Sexual Minority Roundtable, which includes members o f the Portland Police Bureau and members o f Portland’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual and transgender communities. Also on Oct. 11 came the news that two gay men were murdered in Laurel, Miss., ju st 15 milesfrom Ovett, the home o f Camp Sister Spirit, which has been at the center o f violent homophobic backlash fo r the past year. The Jones County Sheriff in charge o f the case refused to refer to the murders as a hate crime and publicly made homophobic remarks to national and local media.
