ju st o u t ▼ aprii 1, 1 0 0 4 ▼ 3 letters State employees not protected by city ordinances To the Editor, On Sunday, March 6, the Corvallis Gazette- Times featured an article in the Opinion Section, “Coming Out At Work.” The article may have given Corvallis and Oregon residents the impres sion that gay persons employed by Oregon State University, or any state agency in Corvallis, are protected by the city of Corvallis’ anti-discrimi nation ordinance. This is not the case. In fact, anyone who works for the state of Oregon in a community that has passed a city anti-discrim ¡na tion ordinance is not protected by that city ordi nance. Last year the attorney for Oregon Stale Uni versity sought and received an opinion by the state attorney general’s office stating that OSU is outside the jurisdiction of the city and does not have to abide by its city ordinances—i.e., the city cannot make the state enforce or obey a city ordinance. OSU asked for this opinion specifi cally to find out if they were bound by Corvallis’ anti-discrimination ordinance. Prior to this opin ion, the Bureau of Labor and Industries told me they wanted to “take this case to the wall.” Since the opinion was issued, the Bureau of Labor and Industries has declined to investigate anti-dis crimination complaints against OSU, based on this opinion. Until a stale anti-discrimination ordinance is passed, those of us in state service do not have equal employment or civil rights that hetero sexual people enjoy. If you read the article care fully, it was obvious that OSU is not the safest place for a gay man or lesbian to work. Pat Mohr Corvallis Land grants available to lesbians To the Editor, As a member of the board of directors of Lesbian Natural Resources, I would like to bring to the attention of your readers the work of our organization. LNR is dedicated to the develop ment of rural lesbian communities. We fund grants for land purchase and development, community development programs, and individual and self- sufficiency projects. Our intention is to support the growth of lesbian communities that are ac tively creating lesbian culture, preserving land- based life skills and rural ecosystems, and discov ering non-oppressive ways to live and work to gether. It is important that the work of LNR become known throughout as many lesbian communities as possible. We want, specifically, to disseminate information about LNR to lesbians of color. As a lesbian of color. I know that many lesbians of color have rural backgrounds and perhaps have had to abandon their desire to live on the land. LNR would like to make it possible for lesbians of color to consider establishing a rural lesbian com munity or joining an existing community. In addition to monetary grants, LNR’s advo cacy committee will, upon request, assist dykes with issues such as land purchase, establishing a land trust, and obtaining tax-exempt status. Jake courageously fought AIDS for five and one-half years, and through his brave struggle furthered medical knowledge and re search. Jake was a beacon of spirit which inspired everyone who knew him. Even his battle with AIDS did not dampen his zest or love of life. Through the support of his mother, Sharon, Jake was able to retire from work and spend his last days in his home.
