Organizers agreed that the center would be launched if sufficient funds ($200,000 Australian dollars) could be raised by Dec. 10. As of the night of the tenth, organizers had raised only $180,000 for the center. When this was announced at a concert that night in celebration of the end of the fund-raising campaign, the 1,500 lesbians in the audience c ame up with the needed $20,000 to reach the goal. This move inspired physician Deborah Saltman to donate another $50,000, bringing the project to its final target of $250,000. CHINA Health officials fear that the number of people infected with HIV could grow to between 8 mil lion and 20 million by the year 2000. Officials reported that ignorance, drug use and prostitution could cause an epidemic on a similar scale to that in Thailand. AIDS workers in China began an educational campaign last year, but it was quickly closed down by the Communist Party because it promoted human rights. The Party also prohibited condom advertising claiming that it “promoted promiscuity.” COLOMBIA The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission has called on the Co lombian government to protect the safety of an AIDS hospice in Bo gotá. The Eudes F o un d at i o n hospice has been targeted with death threats, physi cal violence and a fire bombing. The Founda tion’s director, Bemado Vergara, a Catholic priest, belives that the attacks are an attempt to force the hospice to close and leave Patria, an area north of Bogotá. A legal suit has been filed by the Patria Neighbor hood Association, who seek to force the hospice’s relocation. That petition was rejected by the Columbian courts. Reportedly, a beating took place in the neighborhood after the suit was re jected. Some residents had vowed they would take independent action. IGLHRC representa tives have met with the Consul General of Colom bia to protest the government’s inaction. The IGLHRC is monitoring the situation at the hos pice. FRANCE A new condom campaign has been undertaken by the small town of Reuil-Malmaison. The cam paign includes the cooperation of over 100 bars and restaurants who will distribute free condoms with each cup of coffee. The exhibit at the Jerusalem The ater includes 20 photos by Israeli photographer Ya’akov Saporta that show lesbians from San Francisco dressed in leather, showing tattoos and pierced body parts and appearing half nude. Op ponents to the exhibit called it an “abomination” and said that “Jerusalem...is a holy city, and we must consider carefully before presenting such an exhibition.” The mayor was quoted as saying in response, “We have no intention to prevent the showing of this or any other exhibit” JAPAN A film by Chicago filmmaker H.D. Motyl, has been banned by Japanese customs officials be cause it shows seven seconds of male frontal nudity. Token of Love, originally scheduled to appear in the Tokyo Lesbian and Gay Film Festi val, has already appeared at several festivals, and tells the story of a gay man’s struggle to end a long-term relationship. NETHERLANDS The Dutch police have announced that they wil) begin to recruit gay men and lesbians to become police officers. Officials report that gay men and lesbians rarely report crimes to the police because they fear mistreatment. The Dutch Min ister of Justice has also promised that a law giving gay and lesbian couples rights similar to those of married couples would soon be voted on. PAKISTAN The opening of the country’s first police sta tion staffed by all women has been announced by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. The station, lo cated outside the capital city of Islamabad, will deal exclusively with crimes related to women. Bhutto proposed the new station after hearing reports of women being sexually abused by male police officers. UKRAINE The government has ordered mandatory HIV testing for all foreigners working or attending schools in the country. Any person testing posi tive for HIV will be expelled from the country. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES The government has ordered mandatory HIV testing as a residency requirement for all foreign ers and their dependents over age 18 living in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, the three largest of the seven states comprising the United Arab Emir ates. Those testing positive will be expelled from the country.
