Writing articles of incorporation and by-laws, forming task-specific committees and gaining non-profit status arc the next goals of the center organizers. A rented or donated location still has to be established. Plans for a center began after the No on 9 campaign, when a group of people saw a need for a place for people to meet, pool resources, net work and find mutual support. A task force was developed and conducted a survey of sexual mi nority organizations around the state to assess needs of the community. From survey results, the task force wrote a mission statement. It states that the primary pur pose of the center “is to serve as a hub connecting and housing organizations which provide support services and resources, educational and social programs, and community building endeavors to foster the development and empowerment of the sexual minority population of Oregon and to promote the quality of life for individuals of that community." Organizers emphasize that the center is to be owned by the community and not by any one group of persons. To help organizers in the next stages of devel oping the center, call (503) 295-9732.
