Jesse Helms of North Carolina— reneged on their grants to four artists because they were considered obscene? Portland audiences will have a chance to see what Jesse didn’t want you to see, when Stark Raving T heater's Raving After Hours presents The Lady Dick by Holly Hughes. Directed by Denise M orris, The Lady Dick tells the story of Garnet McClit, a gun-totin ’ dick lookin’ for a mystery to solve. But on this night (like any other), she finds the only crime being committed is by beautiful and dangerous dykes whoopin’ it up at ‘The Pit.’’ It’s all about bad girls from the wrong side of town. The Lady Dick plays Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 14 through Feb. 12, at Stark Raving Theater, located behind Common Grounds Coffee House (4319 SE Hawthorne). Portland Lesbian Choir presents its first concert of the season The Portland Lesbian Choir enters its sev enth season with a winter concert, “Listen to a Woman’s Voice: Rooted in the E arth,” on Satur day, Jan. 22 at 8 pm. This concert features works of contemplation and celebrates the way hu mans relate to the planet through music focused on spirituality and respect for na ture. Ju d y Fjell, a record ing artist of ex- c e p t i o n a 1 warmth, pas sion and hu mor, will be the C h o ir’s special guest. The concert Fjell will be performed at the Scottish Rite Temple, 709 SW 15th Ave. Tickets are $10 and are available at It’s My Pleasure, Annie Bloom’s Bookstore and at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The concert will be interpreted for the hearing impaired and is wheelchair accessible. The choir also provides on-site childcare. For Portland clubgoers who tiptoe through more than tulips, it’s important to know what the effects are of drugs like Ecstasy, more commonly known as MDMA, a chemical compound in the amphet amine family. The very-very-very progressive San Francisco AIDS Foundation has just released a brochure on “Ex.” According to Les Pappas, sub stance abuse intervention coordinator at SFAF, the increasing presence of drugs like Ecstasy, LSD, heroin, speed and cocaine in the nightclub and dance-party scene can lead to unsafe sexual prac tices. “HIV transmission is often the hidden danger of drug use. Unfortunately, people have little or no education about drugs and drug use. Society wrongly feels that not talking about drugs will lead to not using drugs.
