In the ruling, Judge John Howse said that Raymond Gibson had corrupted the youth, who was 13 when the assaults began in 1989. Howse said he had heard no evidence to suggest that the boy had same-sex attractions before meeting Gibson. “By converting this boy into a confirmed homosexual, if you have, you will have deprived him of his basic human rights to enjoy the advantages of a heterosexual union, the judge stated to Gibson. The court had heard testimony that it was possible to be converted from heterosexual to hom osexual but that it was m uch m ore difficult to be converted from homosexual to heterosexual. ENGLAND London police have few clues in their search for a serial killer dubbed “Sado Sam,” who has vowed to kill one gay man in London every week. The police have appealed to the killer to resume his practice of phoning them frequently, or to find other ways to contact them. There were five killings of gay men between early March and mid-June, thought to be the work of one killer. The five victims are believed to have met the killer in gay bars and clubs, and were strangled or suffocated at their homes after apparently engag ing in SM sex with the killer. An anonymous caller, thought to be the killer, told reporters at a tabloid newspaper that it was his New Year’s resolution to kill one gay man a week. Six gay men have reportedly said they had been approached by a man with long, blonde hair who mentioned wanting to have sex with an “unconscious partner” or mentioned he was inter ested in “strangulation and throat slitting.” GABON Black Americans and Africans attending a five-day African-African American Summit in Libreville, Gabon, in central Africa, discovered that they are fighting the same war against AIDS “Multiple generations are being simultaneously wiped out by AIDS on two continents,” said Debra Fraser-Howze, director of the Black Lead ership Commission on AIDS in New York City Fraser-Howze said she had to fight for the inclusion of a workshop on AIDS at the confer ence. GERMANY A German court on June 23 refused compen sation to a former Army officer who said anti-gay discrimination had made him mentally ill. The man said he had suffered constant discrimination from Army superiors, having been rejected for general staff training and put on a pension at age 35, on grounds thai he was unfit for re.vice. The court deliberated on the case for 10 years, consid ering whether his illness had other causes. The case was dismissed without comment. IRELAND A bill decriminalizing sex between men has moved one step closer to approval. The lower house of the Irish parliament approved a measure June 24 to repeal the only remaining sodomy law in western Europe. It would legalize sex between consenting men, and set the age of consent for any sexual activity at 17. Sex between women is not illegal in Ireland. The legislation is not expected to encounter much opposition. The sodomy reform measure is part of a wave of social change in Ireland, which has lifted a ban on women traveling abroad for abor tions, and moved to allow the general sale of condoms.
