J u s t o u t V J u n o 1 9 9 2 V 23 Jewish Gay Pride service Congregation Havurah Shalom will conduct its first lesbian and gay pride service on Friday, June 19. The service is scheduled to coincide with the Portland Lesbian and Gay Pride Celebration, which happens on June 20. The event will be held at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, 6151 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, and will begin at 8 pm. The event is open to the public. The service is being organized by m em bers o f the congregation and will include music and poetry. Coffee and refreshm ents will be served fol lowing the service. Rabbi Joseph W olf will participate in the event. “My understanding is that this is the first ever Gay Pride service sponsored by one of the major Jewish congregations in Portland,” organizer Barbara Diamond said. “In light of the activities of the OCA, it is very important for mainstream religious organizations to show support for prin ciples of freedom and diversity.” Methodists continue condemnation/confusion United Methodists authorized a church-wide study of homosexuality but reaffirmed the church’s condemnation of homosexual practice. It was the third major Protestant body in the last year to uphold its position against homosexual activity but to continue study of the issue. The church voted 710-238, a 75 percent majority, to maintain its rejection of homosexual practice. It also ap proved a section upholding civil rights of homo sexuals, including partnerships for sharing re sources and responsibilities, but it deleted a phrase referring to same-sex relationships. A caucus of lesbians and gay men staged a rumbling and persistent demonstration when their representatives were denied the floor. A dozen of them unfurled a huge black-and-white banner in front of the podium, saying: “The Stones Will Cry Out.” The phrase referred to Jesus, saying that would be the reaction if his message was silenced. Demonstrators in the galleries stamped their feet, creating a low growling like distant thunder. The presiding officer, Bishop David Lawson, appealed several times for a halt to the commotion and for the demonstrators to leave with their banner, but to no avail. The Associated Press Lutherans Concerned to gather The biennial assembly of Lutherans Con- cemed/North America will be held July 9-12, 1992, at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. The keynote speaker for the weekend will be author Chris Glaser, a regular columnist for the More Light Update and Second Stone. Catholics and Anglicans to meet An ecumenical conference of Roman Catho lics and Anglicans committed to the full inclusion of gay and lesbian Christians in the life and leadership of the church will be held in Vancouver, B.C., July 31-August 2. Integrity Vancouver is co-sponsoring the conference with Dignity Canada. The conference theme is “Christ has no body now, but ours-to love justice.” Conference planners state that “cutting edge” issues of special significance to gay and lesbian Christians will be considered: covenanting of gay and lesbian rela tionships, gay and lesbian clergy, justice for gay and lesbian people as part of the “seamless gar ment” of social justice. Catholic Archdiocese brings anti-gay group founder The Archdiocese of Portland hosted a confer ence with the founder of “Courage,” a Catholic group that claims to “cure” homosexuals. Father John Harvey, the founder o f the group, and Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, a Freudian psychologist who believes he can “heal” homosexuals, spoke at the all day conference to teach priests how to be chaplains in the program. “Courage” is a 12-step, homosexuals anonymous program. The program teaches homosexuals how to live a chaste life. According to members of Dignity Portland, Arch bishop William Levada and three other priests were the only ones in attendance, two of those priests left in dissatisfaction at noon. The Arch bishop has been working to bring Harvey and Nicolosi to Portland for over a year. Fr. John Harvey also lectured at a public event, where two dozen gay and lesbian Catholics at tended, including the president of Dignity, Kevin Calegari, from San Francisco. Archbishop Levada wants to see a program created to outreach and minister to the lesbian and gay community. “Courage” has been part of his goal. Dignity Portland is not considered an offi cial ministry of the Archdiocese of Portland, though it would like to be recognized as an out reach and ministry program of the Archdiocese. Dignity and Levada have been in dialogue and Levada has agreed to form a task force. Dignity Portland has not found any priest that works under the Archbishop to serve on the task force. Dignity has turned to priests who are independent of Archbishop Levada. The Archbishop has not convened the task force.
