H&was 58 years old. As the artist Etienne, Dorn’s sexual fantasy art is known throughout the world and has been featured in posters and magazines over four de cades. With his lifelong associate and partner, Chuck Renslow, Dom created Chicago’s infamous Gold Coast Leather Bar and International Mr. Leather, promoting both to worldwide recognition via his artistic talents. An early pioneer in gay male erotica, Orejudos (aka Etienne and Stephen) was recognized as one of the great masters of fantasy art Tonko Laaksonen Tonko Laaksonen, known as Tom of Finland, homoerotic artist, died of an emphysema-induced stroke in Helsinki on Nov. 7, 1991. In the course of his career, Tom saw his artwork go from being unpublishable in the world to receiving worldwide recognition. In recent years, Tom of Finland drawings have been col lected by such celebrities as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Tom created literally thousands of his ‘Tom ’s Men,” phenomenally muscular and masculine cops, sailors, motorcycle men, and loggers who play against every homosexual stereotype. Al though his leather men are the epitome of rough and rugged, they are never dangerous. With all his passion for the heaviest of sexual imagery, Tom strove to present positive role models in his art. In the last ten years, he added condoms and safe sex admonitions to his work. “I am not ashamed that I draw men having sex. I work hard to make sure they are proud men having happy sex!” In 1986, Tom and his business partner Durk Dehner formed the non-profit Tom of Finland Foundation to have a museum of erotic art as a safe home for Tom and similar artists, gay and otherwise. The Foundation and its members will continue to work toward that end. He often enticed me to his apartment with his baking. Bread and cookies that were still warm always sending me home with more than he kept for himself. He was one of the kindest men I have ever know. Although I will miss his voice and smile I know he’ll still hear me when I need to talk. Mark, you are loved and I know you finally felt that.
