Sweet Honey in the

How are your hoop skills doing? Want
to take your basketball team to the
C h ic a g o H o o p s C lassic, the first
ever gay basketball tournament in the
Midwest (see Announcements)? The
Windy City Athletic Association will be
hosting the 10-12 team tournament
the weekend of February 8-10. The
organizers promise a fun-filled time of
exciting basketball, an opening night
party. Chicago nightlife, evening buf­
fets to keep your meal e xp e n se s
down, and downtown accom m oda­
tions. Slots for the tournament are
limited, so call soon.

C om m un ity B o w lin g A s so c ia *
tion begins its 13th annual bowling
season at 11 am on Jan. 6 (see Cal­
endar and Groups). Portland’s gay
leagues are the largest in the state.
The short season (15 weeks) includes
an annual picnic at O a k s Park, an
awards banquet, and Portland’s only
international sporting events, the
Rosebow l C lassic. There are also
weekly monte carlo drawings for cash.
The league not only provides a social
outlet, it also donates to various
community groups. S o dust off those
bowling sh oe s and call 293-0428 for
more information. Last year’s open­
ing day events sa w an overflow
crowd, so the League is starting a
Tuesday evening session to accomo­
date the many bowlers in our commu­
nity.
D ign ity Portland, the organization
for gay and lesbian Roman Catholics
and their friends, invites all gay and
lesbian community organizations to
send two representatives to their
annual community dinner dinner (see
Calendar). This is Dignity’s gift to the
community and is always a popular
event. Invitations have been mailed
out, but if your group is not on the
mailing list, please call 295-4868.
I know. I know. You’ve always wanted
to be a part of the fabulous Portland
G a y M e n 's Chorus! N o w 's your
chance. Auditions will be held on
W ednesday. Jan. 2 and Thursday.
Jan. 3. from 6:30-9:30 pm (see C al­
endar). You will be joining the C h o ­
rus for the second concert of its 11 th
season with special guest star Mam i
Nixon. You should remember Mam i
a s the singing voice behind Natalie
W oo d in W est Side Story, Deborah
Kerr in The King and I. and Audrey
Hepburn in M y Fair Lady. Sh e also
won a Tony for her performance in the
Broadway version of M y Fair Lady.
Conducted by Jon Rollins. Broadway
on Broadway will also feature works
by Stephen Sondheim and other com­
posers. The show is scheduled for
Saturday April 6 at 8 pm. And all it
takes is passing a 10-minute audition!

concert, an d pie so c ia l Jan. 26
(see Calendar)! The concert recog­
nizes the release of their third album
Headline. Following the concert there
will be a memorabilia party and pie so­
cial. You can bake. buy. or bring a pie.

wonderful group whose roots are right
here in the Pacific Northwest. Tick­

Sw ee t Honey In the R o ck comes
to Portland (see Calendar). A quintet
of black women singers, they began
performing in W ashington, D C in
1973. Sw eet Honey has gone on to
international acclaim. The group’s
repertoire is rooted in the tradition of
black American a capella choral sing­
ing. You won’t want to miss this one.
