s Don 7 attack OPB To the Editor, When I read Mollie Sidhe's remarks about Oregon Public Broadcasting (June 1990), I was steamed. My first letter was quite ungracious and even contained speculation on what Mollie was full of and how full she was. Such an attack, however, wouldn’t serve any positive purpose and that is exactly why I felt so angry when I read your comments. Put away your labels. OPB has no need of such unfair burdens. OPB m inors the wondrous potential of the human being. It is a place to salve the raw grind of our society and maybe remind us of how life could be. Don’t attack OPB, take a lesson. Doyle M artin Portland Past good taste To the Editor: I am grateful for this newspaper in many ways: it keeps me informed and apprised of events in our community both locally and globally. However, the ads in the back of the paper have gone past the line of professional- ism and good taste. I understand that they are a source of much needed income, but surely they could be more discreetly done. I mean, does there have tc be open flies and pubic hair? I think not. I patronize Just Out advertisers whenever I o f what? I hope you can clear this up for me. One other thing. On the subject of labels, which you mention in your editorial, I think it is time we stopped kidding ourselves by calling them “neo nazis.” There nothing “neo” about them. To paraphrase Gertrude Stein, "Nazi is a nazi, is a nazi, is a nazi.” Thank you for your indulgence. can. I contribute my sparse pennies to the community as much 1 am able. But the crudeness of the particular ads 1 was referring to, is unnecessary and I suspect, if a straight and ignorant individual should come upon those ads, the misconception that gay folks have just “one thing” on their mind, would further be increased. Surely the advertisers could tap into some creativity and discretion and produce some better quality, non-exploitive ads. R L . Jackson Editor’s reply: Please check our correction after Gay Games Update. I agree with Gertrude Stein and you. They are nazis. Rylee Brown Portland Editors reply: Just Out is fo r the whole lesbian and gay community. Each segment has a distinct and beautiful voice. There is room fo r all. Just Out w ill not cater to only an accepted few . Nor will we practice any form o f prejudice or bigotry. We are an open forum . A sister's thanks To the Editor, I had the best possible Lesbian and Gay Pride present this year. My older sister sent me a card thanking me for coming out to her years ago because it made her own coming out this year much easier! I came out in 1974 and Sue was the only sibling I chose to tell. I knew the others would figure it out and be fine, but 1 wanted to tell Sue myself because I felt closer to her. She got a divorce in the mid ‘70s largely because her husband couldn’t handle her wanting to finish college which had been interrupted by marriage. My big sister received her MA last year in counseling and got a job at a pastoral counsel- Nazi is a nazi, is a nazi To the Editor, First, a few words of praise for the changes I have noticed in the last two issues. Good job. I look forward to seeing them continue. However, with your article about Team Portland, you ran a photograph that has me somewhat baffled. Neither of the women in the picture are mentioned anywhere in the article and the photo caption is somewhat confusing— “second and third place winners respectively,” ing center near Mesa, Arizona. She writes that she is buying a house with Rita, who is taking early retirement because “neither o f us is getting any younger, and both of us have wasted an extraordinarily long time before finding ourselves in a truly life-giving and mutually nourishing relationship. “1 want to thank you, Nancy, for having the courage to come out to me when you d id Through the years, I have had to sort tlirough my feelings and thoughts concerning homo sexuality and homophobia, so that when I came to the place o f realizing my own orientation, I experienced little of the turmoil and pain that i know many others have gone through. I am grateful for the sharing I have received from so many, so that my own process was made easier. I hope to pass it on.” You are welcome, sis. And welcome to the lesbian community.
