Portland men's study study o f the consequences o f the AIDS epidemic on the personal relationships o f men who have sex with men is being conducted by Kerth O ’ Brien, Ph.D., o f the Department o f Psychology at Portland State University in collaboration with the Cascade A ID S Project and funded in part by the Medical Research Foundation o f Oregon. The first part o f the study involved about 75 gay and bisexual men o f diverse racial, social, and sexual backgrounds who partici pated in small group discussions o f their experiences relating to the epidemic. Most participants agreed that specific things said to them about A ID S were not as important as perceived underlying intention. “ When somebody says to me ‘ Stay healthy,’ ” one participant said, “ I can tell the difference between ‘ stay healthy because I don’ t want the neighbors asking me questions’ versus ‘ stay healthy because I love you.’ ” The men also discussed relations with family and relatives, job-related discrimina tion, and other ways the epidemic has changed their lives. The results from the small group discussions are being used to construct a questionnaire which w ill be distributed next year.
