YEA! WE GIVE YOU TME BEAT OE WHAT WE KNOW Rest area busts increasing ctivity at the Baldock Rest Area on 1-5 south of Charbonneau has led to the arrest of several men during recent months. Some of those arrested have already been convicted of Public In decency while others are still awaiting trial. Information indicates that the men have been arrested at their homes by police from Clackamas County. They are shown photographs of themselves, then taken into custody. One man says he was shown a photograph of himself while sitting in a stall and another while he was getting into his car. Ben Merrill, a Portland attorney who has represented two of the men, says, ‘ ‘So far, those who plead guilty to “ Public In decency” are being sentenced to one year bench probation, a fine of $100 and up to sixty hours of community service in lieu of jail.” Police tactics in these arrests raise ques tions whether the aim is to stop public sexual activity or to harass gay men. Prominently displayed signs warning of area surveillance and AIDS would have an undeniable effect on many people who participate in such activities as has been shown recently in San Francisco. And signs would certainly be more cost effective. But then, of course, a few cops would be deprived of their jollytimes. When the Congressman asked Hakim to describe his affection for Col. Created and hosted by Michelle Lengua- bush and Howie Baggadonutz. Queersville has been broadcast on KBOO 90.7fm since January 1986 and has proved to be one of the listener-supported radio station’s most popular fundraisers. Q Last month Just Out erroneously report ed that Queersville would be leaving the air because of problems with the Federal Communications Commission. Neither KBOO nor Queersville has encountered any difficulties with the FCC over material used on the program. Queersville will dis appear because Michelle is moving away. Michelle called us immediately after reading our faux pas to tell us she’d like nothing better than to stick around and stick it to the FCC but she will be leaving Portland in August. Queersville is the first gay/lesbian radio program in Portland to gain a community wide audience. Howie and Michelle created universal comedy based on the lesbian/gay experience and led Queersville's many volunteer players to outrageous and compelling comedic extremes. They will be missed. Maybe, like Brigadoon, Queersville will reemerge from the mists someday.
