L T E T E married for 10 years and I have two daughters. I will be 30 this month. I do, however, have gay friends, some whom I have known and loved since I was very young. It upsets me to think of them dying at all, let alone from AIDS. I do not believe any human being should die from AIDS. Who is this man to verbally state how other human beings should die? And how dare he, as a professional person, say this to me? I cannot express to you enough how angry and sick I feel over this. Please let me know if there is anyone that I may report this to. I will greatly appreciate any help you can give me. I would like to share this with you. I am so very shocked and angry, I can barely contain myself. 1 would like to know if there is anything 1 can do about it. This morning I had an appointment with Dr. Fred E. Scott, DMD. As I sat in the dental chair and allowed this Dentist to examine my teeth, he (the dentist) started talking about Liberace and his lovers. He then made the statement that “ All Gay People should die from AIDS.” I pushed his hands away, unhooked my dental bib, rose up from the chair and gathered my things. To Dr. Scott’s surprised look I said, “ I came to this office for an examination, not to listen to you.” Then I walked out. I am not a gay person. I have been R Catherine Crooker American Heart Association 2121 SW Broadway Portland, OR 97201 Dear Ms. Crooker: I was disappointed and angry when I read the flyer for the American Heart Association Couples Race to see no less than seven times in two columns of print that gay couples are not welcome. The fact that the restriction is mentioned so often in so little space indicates that the decision to exclude same-sex couples was carefully thought out. I wonder what you and the other sponsors are afraid of, and why you feel it necessary to combine an appeal for money with such up-front bigotry. When it comes to donating money, I, and I hope the thousands of other gay women and men in Portland, will consider carefully why we should donate to any charity, however deserving, that goes to such lengths to insult us. If I enter the race, I will do so with my partner of ten years, who is not of the opposite sex.
