Just out Voi. 4 No. 3 January 1987 S te p p in ' O u t 1986: That was the year; that was. Co-Publishers Renee LaChance and Jay Brown coop of the Year Award goes to Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Patricia Joy. Program Director Joy was responsible for scheduling during November and December the reading of China Card, a new novel by ex-Watergate co-conspirator John Erlichman, on the Radio Reader. After listening to the coverage of the Irana- gua debacle every evening on ‘ ‘All Things Con sidered,” China Card was like getting a worm’s eye view of the whole mess. China Card chronicles Nixon’s secret negotiations with Chou En Lai, PremierofThe People’s Republic o f China during the Cultural Revolution. Did Joy know something? So how about it, Neil? • Poop o f the Year plops on the heads of US Supreme Court Justices Byron White, Sandra Day O ’Connor, William Rehnquist, Warren Burger and Lewis Powell. And we could all squeeze off a round or two for John Paul II. • A little more respect, please. ^ T ,* e s ess than a decade ago, gays and les bians gained recognition as a minority when President Jimmy Carter appointed Midge Costanza liaison between his administration and the lesbian and gay com munity. Carter’s move was controversial, but it was accomplished, nevertheless. On January 12, Neil Goldschmidt, a member o f Carter’s cabinet, will take office as Governor o f the State of Oregon. As holder of the highest office in the state, Goldschmidt could emulate the vision o f his former boss and appoint a liaison to Oregon’s gay and lesbian community. The woods are full of candidates. Virtually every commission, bureau, division, etc. in state government employs several individuals capable of serving as ombudsperson for us. Wishes for the new year I ’ve been in the habit of making wishes indis criminately, but I thought that since it’s Christ mas Eve a couple of wishes just might be in order. None o f the wishes are impossibles; they just require a lot of hard work. 1. A cure for AIDS. 2. An AIDS vaccine. 3. The repeal of all laws penalizing sexual relations between consenting participants. 4. An end to the arms race and total, uncon ditional disarmament. 5. Peace and goodwill to all in the universe.
