U fe in the Roseburg area is as m uch fun as ever, at least it’s fun fo r me. Som e say there’s no culture here and they’re bored. My stan dard response is that if there’s no culture where you’re at, create som e o f your own. T h a t’s w hat we base ou r com m unity on, the cu ltu re we create, not the culture that has been created fo r us. In ou r culture we define ourselves, otherwise we are defined by the standards o f others. (Jh oh, I’m starting into a serm on, I’d better stop. Anyway, ou r culture here in the Gay and Lesbian C om m unity o f D ouglas C ounty is socializing at pot lucks, dance parties, swim parties, B B -Q ’s, coffee house nights, and sharing w ith each other at m ovie n ight som e fine gay and lesbian film s and classics, too. All the while our speakers bureau is educating the general public about o u r existence by m eeting with groups o f people. Mon-gays w ill never achieve aware ness unless they get to know you as a gay or lesbian person. In Roseburg, we have no bar in w hich we m ay stay separate w ithout dialogue between the diverse cultures o f ou r com m unity. Ail we have is each other, so we learn to w ork to gether. Together we accom plish ou r goals. I have a vision. Vision is one thing that has kept the Roseburg com m un ity fresh. My vision is attainable, too, but I need your help. I w ould like to see a coalition o f rural O regon gay and lesbian com m unities w orking toge th e r so we w ould be able to speak about the diverse needs o f rural O regonians. It’s im po rtan t fo r all rural gay people to have a voice and to let people know we re here and how we feel about certain issues. If we say nothing then ail we hear is the voice o f big city needs w hich aren’t always the needs o r wants o f rural com m unties. If this sounds worthw hile m aybe in the future we can hold a conference to m e e t discuss and network. I’d love to hear you r views on this. W rite to me, Jesse Corder, C /O GALA, P.O. We are planning a vigil in response to the recent S uprem e C ourt ruling concerning G eorgia S odom y Laws and the LaRouche Initiative in California. We feel these incidents are very threatening to o u r rights as individu als. We want o u r country to know how we feel. It is an atrocity that this sort o f thing is hap pening and if enough folks stand up against it, o u r action w ill cause people to take a seri ous lo ok at them selves in relation to us. I w elcom e all O regonians to jo in us in body and s p irit If you can’t be there, have a vigil and voice yourselves in your town. Do it now! N ext week m ig h t be to o late. The vig il w ill be on the steps o f the D ouglas C ounty C ourt house on N ovem ber 2, at 6:00 P.M. Let’s show o u r friends in C alifornia som e O rego nian s u p p o rt The statem ent we wish to con vey th ro u g h o u r vigil is as follows: The rights o f each individual to the pursuit o f life, liberty, and happiness is a fundam en tal, constitutional-backed rig h t We, as gay and lesbian individuals protest the recent Suprem e C ourt ruling. This deci sion by o u r Suprem e C ourt violates ou r con stitu tion al rights. Furtherm ore, we protest the efforts o f individuals in o u r neighboring state o f C alifornia who are w orking to pass the LaRouche Initiative. This piece o f legislation is n o t based on factual inform ation. If passed, this initiative w ill bring unnecessary pain and suffering to countless fam ilies and individu als. It w ill set a precedent o f discrim ination th a t w ill affect every part o f ou r lives. The message, we, the gay and lesbian people w ant to convey to the public and to o u r brothers and sisters in C alifornia is our rig h t to love w ithout governm ent intervention. O n N ovem ber 4th, the voting public o f C alifornia w ill take a step tow ard o r away from true liberty. GALA o f Roseburg asks you to help us by helping them make the rig ht decision. Jo in us at the Douglas County Courthouse in vig il and stand up fo r the rights o f all in d i viduals regardless o f their sexual preference.
