' '- I 1 1 1 ’ ^ ^ 1 / Boycott continues Carl Cadonau Alpenrose Dairy 6149 SW Shattuck Road PortJand, Oregon 97221 Mr. Cadonau: This letter is to inform you that! am boy cotting Alpenrose products due to your homophobia and your blatant attack on free speech by attempting to prevent Food Front from spending its advertising money as it chooses. Since you are uncomfortable with the idea o f having your product advertised to gay people I can only assume that you do not want gay money to be spent on your product and to find its way into your bank account I use a half gallon o f milk daily, in addition to other dairy products, and am now buying Carnation. Word o f this boycott has spread throughout the gay community and is being observed as well by our straight friends who cannot in good conscience contribute toward bigotry. I am sending a copy o f this letter to my neighboitiood Thriftway store to let them know why they have lost my business. Unfortunately, there is little point in shopping at their store for my other needs if I can’t purchase the milk label o f my choice there. Since gay people make up 10 to 15 per cent o f the population, you have been collect ing gay money all along before making your prejudice known. Because not all gay people and their straight friends read Just Out, it would be more effective for you to advertise in the newspapers and on TV urging gay- supportive people not to buy your products. But for your own sake, it would be better for you to get psychiatric help to overcom e your homophobia. It is indeed an irrational fear to be afraid o f gay people, and irrational fears are a sickness that can be treated. As the old myths are dispelled and the walls o f prejudice are broken down as more and more gay people “com e out" and claim their place in the world, homophobia is increasingly becom ing a handicap to functioning in m od ern society. Also thank you for printing the m ost heart-warming and sensible letter of Ann Marcotte Shepherd in your current issue. I wrote Mr. Carl Cadonau, President of Alpenrose June 3 rd To date I have received no response. However I remain confident that he does not wish m e to purchase his products. O n that date I began my personal boycott o f all Alpenrose dairy products. Being one who boycotted all Florida Orange Juice pro ducts while Anita Bryant waged her hateful campaign, I am confident I can g o many months, even years, without Alpenrose. Chuck Engel Lesbian wedding a joyful event To the Editor On May 31,1986 at 3 in the afternoon in Leach Botanical Garden, my lover and I promised to be life partners “ in the warmth and witness" o f the fifty guests encircling us. The dream was com ing true. Friends were not only supportive, but excited. The jeweler, the stationer, the baker more than courteous. Everyone involved in the endless details of planning our "handfasting" reacted as though a lesbian wedding was a customary, joyful even t Everyone, that is, except me. As Lee Lynch points out (The Amazon Trail, Just O ut Vol 3 No. 8) the difficult task before us is to give ourselves the approval and right to form such unions. The disapproval and the feeling o f doing something wrong was mine. It was the only flaw in what I think was a perfect wedding. Letter to Penny Dear Ms. Harrington, In light o f the recent events and your resig nation as Police Chief, we want to express our regret and continued support We, the m em bers o f the National Organization for Women, have followed your career with interest and respect W e have stood behind you in your efforts to bring public accountability to the Portland Police Department Your courage and determination have been a model to us all.
