Although this award was given to me per sonally, I would like to accept it on behalf of those whose services to our community during the AIDS epidemic have equaled or exceeded my own. In particular I wish to thank the many persons with AIDS whose courage and willingness to help others despite their own challenges have set an example for us all. Their dignity and continual good will in the face of prejudice and fear continues to be one of our community’s greatest contributions. I also wish to thank our 75 Personal Active Listeners (PALs), who have given so much of their time in support of patients, loved ones, and each other. It is they who give true mean ing to our work. There are other individuals, as well, who deserve the thanks and recognition of us all; especially Brown McDonald, whose constant effort to educate has reduced the risk for countless gay men in our area, and has un- Just Out is published the first of each month. Classified ads must be received at the office of doubtedly saved lives in the process; Tia Plympton, who as PAL Volunteer Coordinator continues to be the heart of an incredible and outstanding relief effort; Bernie Sanford, Sanford Director, and Cal Hackler, whose work wilth the Chester/Esther Brinker Fund has made a critical financial difference for many when no other help could be found; Keeston Lowery, whose skilled rapport and effective diplomacy in the political com mun ity continues to benefit every homosexual person in this area, regardless of their gender or medical condition; and John Baker, whose work with the Right to Privacy PAC and leadership in the City Nights AIDS fundrais ers is too often taken for granted. Without the funding provided by the Port land Gay Men’s Chorus, CH ESS and the PAL Project would not have been able to organize so quickly and effectively. Moreover, the joy and pride which emanates from their music continues to spread cheer and good will at a time when it is most desperately needed. Similarly, we are grateful for the work of City Nights who continue to give us the opportun ity to enjoy fun entertainment while contrib uting to AIDS efforts in the process. Perhaps most of all this award should be shared with the doctors of the Oregon AIDS Task Force, especially Mark Loveless, Jim Sampson, Larry Foster, Bob Miles-Lawrence, and Estill Deitz, whose tireless efforts in the face of so much suffering bring hope and CA1HARTIC COMICS YES... Without the sacrifice of so many other indi viduals — donors, businessmen, artists, writ ers, clergy, health care providers, employers, friends, and families, we would have been overwhelmed by the sheer wieght of the burdens we MUST bear.
