San Diego hosts western GLPA conference The Western Regional Conference o f the Gay and Lesbian Press Association (GLPA) will take place in San Diego on Friday through Sunday, October 18-20, at the Balboa Park Inn in HilkrresL All members o f the GLPA and others in terested in gay and lesbian media issues are encouraged to attend the three-day event Scheduled workshop topics include “ Reporting on AIDS,” “ Gays and Lesbians in the Military,” “Advertising and Media Sales," “ Longstanding Gay Publictions," “ Expanding GLPA Membership," and "Graphic Design in Newspapers nad Magazines.” Representatives of gay and lesbian as well as non-gay publi cations from throughout the west will be in attendance, including staff members o f The Advocate, Coming Up!, o f San Francisco, the San Diego Gayzette, UpDate, San Diego Union, Los Angeles Times and others. The conference’s projected attendance will be around 150, and attendance is limited. Registration is $25 for GLPA members and $35 for non-m embers In addition to workshops, tim e will be avail able for information-sharing among attendees. There also w ill be a reception on Friday even ing fo r conference registrants and gay and lesbian leaders in San Diego. Sundy m orning w ill focus on evaluation o f the conference and suggestions to the GLPA about specific concerns of the Western Region m em bership. Heart from person with AIDS transplanted Doctors who transplanted the heart o f a person with AIDS into a 17-year-old boy in Paris last week said the boy was doing well and that he stood no m ore than a “ m inute” chance o f contracting the disease. Dr. Pierre Huguenard of the Henri-Mondor hospital in the suburb o f Creteil said doctors perform ed the operation last week because there was "little chance" in view of the pa tient's advanced cardiac disease. HuguenarcLsaid the corneas from the man who died of acquired im m une deficiency syn drom e also had been used on two elderly patients, but use o f the kidneys had been rejected. Medical experts said the risk o f contracting AIDS through a heart transplant was reduced because the organ is drained o f blood before being transferred, even if the recipient became a carrier o f the AIDS virus, the chances of contracting the disease were m inim al, they said. About 400 cases o f AIDS has been diag nosed in France, which has become a world leader in research to cure the disease. A survey published by the magazine Paris- Match showed that the French were more afraid o f suffering from cancer or heart dis ease than AIDS. This year marks the first tim e this event has been held in Florida and headquartered at a gay hotel. The Marlin Beach Hotel, confer ence site, an openly gay resort for over 13 years is internationally known not only as a haven for Gay vacationers but as a center for Gay Rights activism. In their honor? A m onum ent to gays killed in Nazi con centration camps was unveiled this May in Hamburg, West Germany. The pink granite m onum ent apparently the first dedicated solely to gays who were in the camps, was placed at the site o f the Neuengame concen tration cam p by a group called Independent Alternative Homosexuals. A ccording to Les bian Connection, about 150 people attended the dedication o f the m o n u m e n t w hich bears the inscription, “ Dedicated to the Homosexual Victim s o f National Social ism . 1985." In eastern France, however, two French wom en reported that a collective o f lesbians and gays were rejected from com m em ora tive cerem onies at the site o f a concentration cam p. The wreath brought by the collective in honor o f 250,000 lesbians and gay men who died in cam ps was also violently removed. One o f the attending Jewish survivors (a m an) stated to the press, "They should have killed them all." Another made the statem ent that “the real victim s and survivors should not be confused with the deviants." Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators Conference to feature GRNL's Nancy Roth Nancy Roth, recently appointed Executive D irector o f the Gay Rights National Lobby (GRNL), w ill be a guest speaker at the fourth annual conference o f the National Associa tion o f Lesbian/Gay Pride Coordinators hosted by the South Florida Gay Pride C om mittee at the Marlin Beach Hotel in F t Lauderdale, O ctober 11-13. Roth, a long-tim e human rights activist and fe m in ist w ill address the delegates at a banquet Saturday n ig h t O ctober 12 and also m oderate one o f the workshop sessions. The topic for her address w ill be gay rights lobby ing, Gay Pride or AIDS.
