A blanket mortgage to cover $15,(XX),(XX) in IxiiuIh
has been executed by the Oregon Improvement Com
pany, in favor of tlio Farmers' Loan & Trust Com
pany, to run forty years at four per cent. The prop
erty enumerated includes 2,528 acres of coal lands in
three districts on I'uget sound, 2,2-b'l acres of timber
land in tlio Bluo mountains, .',113 acres of agricultu
ral land in Grande Hondo valley, four largo steamers,
a coal barge, l!),8f0 shares of stock in the Pacific Coast
Steamship Company, large holdings in several other
companies, twenty-one warehouses, wharf and dock
property in several cities and real estate in Prescott,
Wash., and San Francisco. Tho object of the deal is
to retire six per cent, bonds with four per cent, bonds.
With such an opportunity ub this gives tho Oregon
Improvement Company it ought soon to become one
of tho largest dividend payers in tho world. Money
in tho west commands eight per cent, and ten per cent,
for use in business, and with its magnificent holdings
and the great development its properties are capable
of, tho company ought to accomplish wonders on a
capital costing but four per cent., less than half what
privato individuals are paying.
The movement in the south to raiso a fund for tho
benefit of Jefferson Davis in his old ago is an eminent
ly proper one. It is fitting that the people of tho south
should thus show rcsjtcct for tho man who was their
chief in the perilous times of their rebellion, ami who
has in his own person stood much of tho brunt of their
defeat and tho ignominy of their mistaken cause. Nor
does this feeling of kindliness towards tho president of
the dead confederacy necessarily indicate that they
now hold tho same ideas they then held, or are as un
reconstructed as he and a few others who have never
been reconciled to the death of the cause. Such a feel
ing of tenderness and respect is entirely consistent with
loyalty to the new and better union of states that was
cemented with tho blood of tho flower of both sections,
and did they not entertain it they might well be ac
cused of being devoid of those warm impulses and gen
erous thoughts without which true patriotism cannot
exist.
Among Mr. Wanainaker's suggestions is one that
congress make an appropriation for a jtostal museum.
That's a bright idea on John's part, and this section
will cheerfully contribute a few fossil xstmasters nnd
living wonders in tho persons of postal clerks Mint
would bo an attraction in any museum. If some of
tho department officials at Washington who can't un
derstand why western cities constantly need additional
K)stal facilities while eastern ones go along year after
year with the tamo force if a few of these will crawl
into a glass case on onn of tho highest and dustii it
shelves, and laUd it " Fool ; Worthies except as a
Specimen," wo will feel still better pleased,
The infant damnation doctrine of the Presbyterian
church was voted out of date at Cincinnati by the Pres
bytery, by a vote of 22 to IS, From this time on the
Presbyterians will let Christ have his own way with
those of whom he said, " Of such is tho Kingdom of
Heaven," unless they chance to lie horn with a pair
of lungs sufficiently vigorous to keep them alive until
tho ago of infancy is passed, when they propose to
have them damned whether lie likes it or not, unless
they adopt Presbyterian ideas of theology.
Among other good things the Washington legisla
ture has under consideration is a stringent measure
prohibiting pmo lighting and "glove contests," It
will not be long before California and Texas will be

tality. Washington is shaping legislation that will
invito the brainy ami energetic to make their homes
within her Isirdors, and not tho riff-raff ami scum of

All the provinces of Itratil have given In their ad
herence to tho new republican form of government,
and tho prosoet of Germany being able to satisfy her
gnawing apetito for colonial possessions by swallow
ing some of them do not apear very bright, They
would probably not rest well on Germany's stomach
in any event, and she might 1st compelled to take an
other Sumoan emetic.

The discovery of two knives that belonged to Dr.
Cronin on the erson of Coughlin when ho was arrest
ed, a fact that has just come to light, is one of tho
strongest evidences against that arch-conspirator, and
is another example of how unconsciously a criminal
will carry alsmt with bint useless evidences of his
crime,
