Good, roomy houses, hard finished and neatly painted, are rented at 17.60 per month to employes having families, and the others are boarded for $5.00 a week. It would seem as though this were the workman's Utopia, for with good wages, steady work, no saloons or other temptations for him to squander his money, and kind and courteous treat ment, how can a man fail to be satisfied with his lot and lay np a competency for old age? Wages are paid regularly and in cash. Not an idle man oan be found. The company has a good store, with a large and well assorted stock of goods, but the " store or der " system is not in vogue there, and the store ex ists more as an accommodation to the men than as a means of making money out of them. A very large trade is enjoyed with set tlers on the islands, of whom it must be remem bered there are a great many, who come to the harbor in boats and on horseback Mr. J. R. D. Conger is manager of the mercantile department and also has charge of the fuel supplies and con siderable other of the out side business. A very complete system of book keeping is carried on, which is in charge of Mr. John II. Oartwrighi Roche harbor is a port of entry, and many ves sels employed in the trade between the porta of Brit ish Columbia aid this country enter and clear there. A deputy collector and an inspector are sta tioned there, who report to the main cffiae at Tort Townsend. The offloe is fully equipped, and any business with the custom bouse of whatever nature oan be transacted there the same as at Tort Town send. Vessels also save pilotage entering and clear icg there when bound to and from Ban Francisco and Britiah Columbia port. A small mail steamer, the J. B. Ltlby, furnishes daily communication with Tort Townsend and Whatoom, and runs to Seattle once a week. The Skagit Ckirj makes two trips a week, touching at all sound port between this point and Taooma. The Canadian Taciflo Navigation Com pany's steamer f remiVr touche there four times a week on the route between Taooma and Vanoouver. jtlHM I. MMII.UN. The large steamer Iduho make three trips a month between Portland and British Columbia ports, stop, ping at that port, and the 0. B A N. Co, will soon put on the CUy of 7'ojx-Jta to assist her in bundling the business of the route. The large steamer Wit. mington, on the route from Ban Frauolsoo to the sound ports also calls there. The Gtorg K. Shirr and the Eliza Anderson will also make two trips a week each between Beattla and Vanoouver, stopping at Roche harbor both ways, and a now line from Vic toria to Whatoom will soon be put on. In addition to all these facilities for shipping, the company ex pects soon to purchase and oporate steamers and barges of its own. The harbor is one of the very best. Nature oould not have done more. It is en tirely land locked, easy and perfect anchorage, and not a rock or shoal in it The oompany has built a neat churoh edifice, call ed "Dollovue Chapd," in which a distriot school is maintained, and which Is open to the free use of all denominations for relig ious services or for pub lio gatherings of any kind. It is provided with mod ern school furniture and seat and baa an organ. Sunday school is held there regularly, and twice a month a Methodist min ister holds services, while a Presbyterian comes onoe a mouth. A free reading room will be fit ted np over the store ss soon a the improvements now in progress are completed. From a reservoir on the hilt above the works water will be supplied in pipes to the entire town, both for domestlo purposes and for protection from fire, the reeervolr being filled by the pump at the oompressed air engine. The Taooma A Roche Harbor Lime Company is oomposed of several well known business men. John H. McMillin is president and general manager, 0. P. Maaterson and L II Manning, of the Pacific National Bank of Taooma, are vice president and treasurer, Ja. M. Keen is secretary, T. D. Wallace and Isaac W. Andorson, of Taooma, being the directors. W. W. Kirkwood, of Portlsnd, Uogh Wallace, of Taeoma, Henry Cowrll, of Ban Francisco, and several eastern parties bold the remainder of the stock. The organ-
