Mr. Chandler has not been too busy to give some at
tention to pnblic affairs, and prior to his election to
the senate he served as c ranty commissioner of Ba
ker county, and as a representative in the legislature,
Martin L. Chamberlin, republican, is a resident
of Salem, and represents Marion county in the sen
ate. He is a native of Michigan; having been born
in Almont, Lapeer county, May 17, 1817. Ten years
later he came to Oregon, and is now engaged in the
real estate business in the capital city. Mr. Cham
berlin was clerk of Marion county four years, prior
to his election to the position he now holds.
Ciiarles A. Cogswell, democrats senator from
the seventh district, composed of Crook, Klamath
and Lake counties, is an attorney at law, residing in
Lakeview. He was born in Rutland, Vt, January 3,
1814, and came to Oregon in 1809, settling in the re
gion which has ever since been his home. Mr. Cogs
well had moved to Illinois in 1850, and served in the
Union army from May, 18C2, to June, 1805, under
General Sherman, being mustered out at Washington
after the grand review. He belongs to the 0. A. R,
and is an aide of the department commander. Mr.
Cogswell has been county judge of Lake county, and
lieutenant colonel on the staff of Governor Thayer.
He is one of the four stockholders and directors of
the Lakeview bank.
S. A. Dawson is a republican senator from Linn
county, where he is engaged in farming near the city
cf Albany. He was born in Marion county, Indiana,
December 4, 1841, and arrived in Oregon September
10, 1801. Mr. Dawson represented Linn county in
the house of representatives in 18.80.
John B. Dimick, republican senator from Marion
county, is a resident of Hubbard, where ho is engaged
xa farming. He was born September 20, 1810, in
Boone county, DL, and came to Oregon when a child,
h 1847. At the first call for troops, he enlisted in
Co. B, First Oregon Cavalry, serving nearly three
years, when he was commissioned First Lieutenant
cf Co. E, First Oregon Infantry, and served until the
close of the war.
S. B. Eakin Jr., republican senator from Lane
county, is cashier of the First National Bank of En
rone City, where he has resided sinco his arrival in
Oregon in 1800. He was born in Elgin, I1L, August
'. 3, 1840. Mr. Eakin was sheriff of Lane county six
pars, from 1874 to 1880, and in 1881 was the only re
publican representative sent to Salem from that coun
(. At the June election, ISsS, he was elected to the

Jamls C. Fcllehton, senator from Douglas conn
, is one of the prominent republicans of the stato,
t ;.i is engaged in the practice of law at Row burg.
He was born in Butler county, Ohio, December 10,
1849, and has been a resident of Oregon since 1853.
He was a private in Co. A, First Oregon Cavalry from
February, 1805, until March, 1800. From April, 1873,
to July, 1885, Mr. Fullerton was receiver of public
moneys at the United States land cftico at Roaeburg,
and was Grand Master of tho Grand Lodge of Ma
sons of this state for the year ending June 10, 1S,H7.
J. H. D. Gray, of Astoria, represents Clatsop
county in tho senate. Mr. Gra7 is a son of tho ven
erable W. H. Gray, who came to Oregon as an asso
ciate of Dr. Marcus Whitman, in his missionary la
bors, in 183G. Ho was born at Lapwai, near Lwis
ton, Idaho, then a portion of Oregon, March 20, 1839,
before any government had leen organized for this
region. The family removed to tho Willamette val.
ley in 1812, and to Clatsop county threo years later,
where Mr. Gray has ever sinco resided, except from
1858 to 1807, when ho was engaged in s'earnloatiEg,
two years on Eraser river and seven on tho Upjwr
Columbia and Snake, By an accident in 1S07 ho
lost his right hand, sinco which time he tins remained
in Astoria engaged in ateamtaat and mercantile en
terprises. In June, 1880, Mr. Gray was elected, on
the republican ticket, joint senator for tho counties
of Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook, at that tirno
having a total population of sixteen thousand Ho
worked assiduously to have justice dono his county
in the new apportionment mado during tho sesaion of
1887, and succeeded in having tho representation in
creased from one-third of a senator and one-half of a
representative to ono senator and two representatives.
John H. Hamilton is a democratic senator rep.
resenting jointly tho counties of Grant and Morrow.
He is engaged in ranching and stock raising at Ham
ilton, Grant county, of which county ho was a com
missioner for four years. Mr. Hamilton was born
April 5, 1H20, in Coburn county, Kentucky. Ho
moved to Indiana when a child, and came to Oregon
in 1852, and has sinco been identified with the growth
of the state,
Edwin T. Hatch, of McCoy, is a republican sen
ator from Polk county, and a native Oregonian. He
was born in Oregon City, March 7, 1S52, his father
being a pioneer of 1813. In thn family moved
to Salem. From 1S70 to 1S77 Mr. Hatch held re
sponsible positions with tho Oregon Steam Narlga
tion Co. and Oregon Railway k Navigation Co., at
Oregon Oity, Salem and Olilo, subsequent to which,
except a year in the grocery badness in Salem, he
has been ecgtged in farming at McCoy.
