226 THE WEST SHORE. tains. I found mnny othnra prospecting for minerals, nd when we compared notes, found argentiferous galena and copper in paying quantities all the way from the Bimmit of tliO fcucliuat L Uih junction of the Kicking Horse and Columbia rivers. The assays wont from $5 to (10 silver to the ton, besides copper and lend Gold we found in the beds of all the streams running from the eastern 1oa of tho Selkirk into the Columbia Iliver. Ou Canyon Creek, lying a few miles south of the junc tion of the Kicking Horse and Columbia rivers, we found several partios washing gold from the bed of the creek and making good wages. Fartlior down the Columbia ltiver we found on Quartz Creek three mining camps, with two men in each, preparing new flumes for placer mining. 1 visited this creek and found the minors pre paring for the summer's work. They state that tho min eral prospects here, both placer aud quartz, are superior to anything they have seen anywhere in thoir travels. I will now give you an idea of the timber from the summit of the llockios to this place. It commences at that point and increases in size as you come westward, notably so as you roach the Columbia Iliver. It is oomjxmod of white, red and Douglas pine, codar and some white wood. The size of the trues would astonish your Ottawa lumbermen; pine aud spruce five foot (diameter) on the stump, and 200 feet long, while many of the beams measured eight feet I feel sanguine that the roturn to the Dominion Oovoruiuout from timber aud minerals alone will, before many years, fully compensate for the expense incurred iu opening up our great Northwest and the construction of the Canadian Paoiiio lluilway. m CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS.
