Hp altn tiriinn.rl tn eniovrd !v the various sections of the nonhwnt During the recent visit of Mr. Villard we received assurances from that gentleman that work now under way will be completed at the earliest possi ble moment, and that new lines to be commenced at various points will lie pushed ahead with undiminished energy. In the first place it must le understood that the roads now built in Oregon ml Washington are under the control of the same management, and are operated harmoniously upon one great plan for the development of the country. WEATF.RK OkF.UON. K'ids now run from Portland up loth sides of the Willamette river as follows : On the east side the main line of the Oregon & California build a line from Seattle throunh the Green rive coal n.ines to a connection with the Cascades division, thus giving Seattle an equal interest with new lacoma in the road across the mountains. A narrow gauge road runs from Tenino, south of New Tacoma, to Olympia, and a road from the latter city, or some other point on the sound, to run through the Chetulis country to Gray's harbor, is promised for the near future. Another projected line is from Vancouver, into the country norm 01 tne Columbia, with a possible extension to Puget sound. EASTERN OREUOK. The 0. R. & N. This is the road now being Dalles, connects the two sections of Oretron lvinir on opposite sides of the Cascade mountain. The crrat Norihern Pacific runs from Vm d'Oreille lake southed. , y , MissouU- up the Hellgate and ..ver the k.ly t.iina to Helena and fWernan ; thence - ' the llelt mountains to Livingston; thenr follows down the Yellowstone valley, throM, Billings and Miles City, to Glendive ; and there leaves the river and strikes off into Dakota and Minnesota. The road is conpleted nearly to Missoula on the west and Helen on the east, and will be entirely finished by the first of Septem ber. At Helena a road down the Missouri to Fort Benton will probabley be constructed hpfni. I,. Efforts are now being made to that end. At Livingston a branch lire -fc Ufa Yellowstone to National Park has aln-adv h. commenced, and will be completed in July. At Billings a line is projected to Fort Benton. running through the Musselshell country. Con tract has been let for fifty miles of this road, to be constructed this year, reachinir valuable cml fields. The Utah aqd Northern narrow mum road runs north from Ogden, Utah, to Butte City and Deer Lodge, a distance of 418 miles, and will be extended to connect with the Northern Pacific at the mouth of Little Blackloot river. Three rails will be laid between Butte Citv and Little Black- foot, and between the latter point and Helena. thus permitting both narrow and standard gauge cars to reach Helena and Butte City. IDAHO. ' Southern Idaho is beinp' ooened uo bv tbe o r t Oregon Short Line, running west from the Union l'acihc at Graneer. Wvominp. It is already completed to Shoshone, from which branch is being constructed up Wood river to open that celebrated mining region, and which will be com-' pieted in a few weeks. From Shoshone the road is being extended westward to the mouth of Burnt liver, to make the connection with the Baker City branch of the O. R. t N. Co., pn viously mentioned. It is generally supposed that this line will be extended down Snake river to Lew. iston. and arrnu Fatrn Wachlnirlnn and the 1 Cascades to some point on Puget sound ) bat that is a matter of extreme uncertainty. The Idaho and Oreeon R. R. Co. bas been organized to build a road from Boise City, to con nect with the O. S. L nd 0. R. & N. Co. at the mouth of Burnt river. OTHER PROJECTS.
