We present our readers on thin page with an engiaving of one of the handsomest and best schoot buildings in the State the" Wasco Independent Academy "situated at Dalles City, in Wasco county. This edifice and the school now maintained in it an: an illustration of what can he accomplished in a work which, though promising pecuniary advantage to no one, is felt by a community to he a social necessity. It is only a year since the project ot building at Dalles an institution of learn ing was seriously enter tained. Haifa dozen res idents of the place meet ing casually, the practica bility of such an enter prise was iliscussscd in a general way, and it was iigrccd to hold a meeting of the people and ascer tain whether there was a reliable basis in the senti ments of the community on which to attempt the raising of funds for a building. The meeting was held at the circuit h-VnTf? court room and was well attended j the spirit of the meeting was so favorable to the project that its ac tive promoters resolved to make a determined effort to carry it through to success. A committee, headed by circuit judge McArthur, was appoint ed to report a plan of or ganiaation which would avoid the legnl difficulties and dangers and the in herent evils of a loan vol untary association, and at the same time secure the corporation was organised in Mav, 1SS0, and before January 1, iSSi.the splendid edifice was completed. The building is of brick, with stone foundation, is two stories high and has four class rooms, with seating capacity tor sixty in each room, besides four other rooms for recitation, apparatus, music, etc. it is hard finished through out, and furnished in the very bel style.
