A Historical Sketch of the Largest
Business House in Southern Ore- j
gon.
The firm of 8, Marks & Co., with
Samuel, Saul and Asher Marks as part
no rs, established their Roscburg busi
ness in 1S56, and the following year
opened a branch house at Oakland, Or.,
with Samuel Marks in charge thereof.
The Oakland house was continued until
1S63, when it was sold to II. Zclinsky
and S. Selig. S. Marks &. Co. in the
dissolved. Mr. Samuel Mark', also
withdrew from the firm about two
yean since. The firm now consists of
Samuel and Asher Marks and Win.
Friedlander, the latter LciiiK admitted
into the firm in 1 SfS. Independent of
merchandise, S. Marks t Co. also ope
rate In land and In the live stock busi
ness. The business, generally speak
ing, is under the management of Asher
Marks and Mr. Pi iedlander, the for
mer attending to all outside business,
and the latter to the office work and
another one as the depot for wheat and
wool, with a capacity of 2,500 tons.
The store is well fitted up; has neat
shelvings, fifteen counters, and hand
some piale glass show cases. The of
fices are roomy, well furnished and con
tain a mammoth Macneale & Urban
safe, with fireproof vault. All the
Conveniences necessary for transacting
so extensive a business have been care,
fully studied and hiought into reouisi
lion, and the linn do, without doiiht, a
larger business than any other house in
Southern Oregon.

associated himself with Mr. Sideman,
and established there the firm of Marks,
Sideman & C. This linn contmucl

w as erected by them in 1S78 at a Ofltl
of $iSxk, and is, without a doubt, the
most substantial structure in Southern
Oregon. The iron front alone weighs
41,000 pounds. It is virtually fucproof.
Beside, the store they have a receiving
warehounc in the rear, 21x100 feet, and
