THE WEST SHORE. 39 rear of the store and one at each side, placed directly opposite, so that a per son standing in line between the two sees innumerable reflections of the cen ter of the store. Above each side mir ror is a segment surmounted by a gol den eagle, and above each pilaster is a golden mortar and pestle. There are no counters, properly speaking, at the sides, the space being taken up by four large glass counter cases, the lower portions being filled with the finest toilet sets, toilet articles, perfumeries, soaps, brushes, etc. THE NOItTII SIDK OF TIIK STORE Is devoted to perfumery and patent medicines, and the south to drugs ami chemicals proper. Presiding with proper dignity over so elegant an es tablishmcnt, is Mr. W. N. Wallace, favorably known here as a competent and careful chemist. Mr. L. Blumaucr, who, we are proud to say, is a horn Oregonian and thorough business man, can usually be found at the wholesale department, which is located at No. 165 First street, three blocks further up First street. The laboratory connected with the wholesale department is in charge of Mr. T. llageny and a full corps of assistants. The linn make all their importations direct, and are sole agents for the Northwest for some of the most reliable medicines known to the trade. The rooms in the upper floors of the block, which are not used by the occu pants of the stores on the first floor, are divided into neat, well lighted offices, and are used mostly by physicians and attorneys. Amongst the most promi nent of the latter, Hon. M. C. George, its well as Catlin & N'ichoals, occupy suits of rooms each. Dr. W. II. Savior will be found in rooms 1, j and 3, and Dr. Frabcr in rooms 5 and (. I"th ot the latter gentlemen's cards appear in our directory of respectable physicians, wherein none but regular graduates are admitted. One of the neatest and best lumished suit of rooms in the building arc occu pied by Dr. J.Welch's dental operating rooms. To make them agreeable and pleasant, nothing has been left undone that even the most exacting taste could possibly suggest. The Doctor hasten established in Oregon for over 15 years and has a very extensive practice. Some of the most difficult operations in den tal surgery ever performed in the North west, were either done by him or under his special advice and supervision. He- sides the Portland office, the Doctor has an office in Oregon City, his place of residence, where he can be oeison- ally consulted on Saturdays of each week. Tiik Laws of Lira.
